Glancing at Carson, Jackson raised his eyebrow before asking, “What’s he doing?”
“Trying to find out if Daniel has any magic,” Carson muttered.
“Why is he doing that?” asked Steel.
After the glow receded, Remy dropped his hand and opened his eyes. Turning to Jackson, he said, “Daniel has no magic…well other than the magic all shifters possess allowing them to turn into animals. However…”
“That can’t be right,” Cody said. “I saw him conjure up a rabbit.”
Raising an eyebrow, Remy stared at his mate’s look-alike brother. “Other than yourself, was he alone when it happened?”
Scratching his head, Cody thought back to the moment the rabbit appeared, frowning slightly. “No…Daniel was playing with Jake and Jessica.”
“Daniel was alone the first time he did it,” Steel said.
“Do you know that for sure?” asked Remy.
Steel shook his head. “No…but who else could it be? We know he can speak to animals…which is magic if you think about it.”
“Babe,” Carson asked Remy while giving Jackson a quick glance before continuing, “if I got it right, Daniel doesn’t have the magic needed to conjure things…like a rabbit, correct?”
“Correct…while he may be able to talk to animals, he can’t summon them to appear.”
Seeing the looks of confusion on the faces of his brothers and Steel, Carson said, “But there is someone who does, correct?”
Nodding, Remy pointed to Jessica. “If I’m not mistaken…she is a first tier magic user.”
Cody’s jaw dropped in disbelief. Then glancing at Carson, he asked, “How can that be? Jessica’s parents were Tundra wolf shifters…I don’t mean any disrespect, but that’s impossible. And another thing…since Mystia placed a spell on Daniel, there haven’t been any more rabbits…or for that matter…any other animal appearing out of nowhere.”
“No idea,” replied Remy.
“Why didn’t Mystia sense Jessica’s magic?” asked Jackson. “And how come you can?”
“My mate is the Keeper of All Magic,” Carson said.
“And that means…exactly what?” asked Steel.
“There’s only a finite amount of magic on earth and my mate is responsible for it,” Carson replied. “In order for him to perform his duties, he has the ability to determine who has magic and how much of it they have.”
“But I thought magic users always know other magic users…like shifters can always scent another one,” Jackson said.
“Usually that’s true,” Remy said. “But in Jessica’s case, her wolf is hiding her magic so Mystia wasn’t able to feel it.”
“Feel it? How?” asked Cody.
“Those who have magic emit invisible electrical charges into the air around them. Other magic users will feel it, letting them know they are in their presence,” Remy explained. “It’s similar to shifters using their sense of smell to detect other shifters.”
“But my daughter isn’t doing that, right?” asked a worried Cody.
“That’s correct,” Remy replied. “Somehow her wolf is able to prevent her magic from emitting any charges. So I’m sure Mystia couldn’t understand how Daniel could conjure up a rabbit but she knew he could talk to animals…which as far as I know, is unheard of…so she assumed they were connected in some way.”
“According to my father, there is a tale about a wolf who has silver fur and eyes and can also talk to animals,” Steel said. “We just assumed the ability to conjure things was part of the story.”
“May I read it?” asked Remy.
“Unfortunately, my father hasn’t found the book he read it in…yet,” Steel replied. “But when he does, I’ll forward it to you.”
Only half-listening to the conversation, Cody kept his eyes on Jessica and couldn’t believe what he was hearing. No matter how he tried, he just couldn’t wrap his mind around the fact his daughter was a witch. Turning his gaze to Remy, he asked, “Something isn’t right…correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure someone can only be a magic user if at least one of their parents was. Both of Jessica’s parents were shifters so where did the magic come from?”
