“There’s a nanny. They just hired her.”
“I thought maybe they expected you to watch her.”
“I told them that wasn’t happening. I work at the library until nine twice a week, and I also have to study. I do watch her sometimes, because she’s a good kid and I love her, but I didn’t want them to expect it. I don’t think Lourdes was happy but I can usually get away with anything that has to do with school.”
“So, you’ll be at our home games?”
“As many as I can.”
“My sister is coming to town for the first home game of the season—we’re playing my old team, the Phantoms.”
“Oh, that’ll be nice for you, won’t it?”
“It’ll be good to see her, but obviously, it’s tricky when her boyfriend plays for the other team.”
“I’d like to meet her.”
“I’ll get you two seats next to each other.”
“Perfect.”
“All right.” I stop in front of the house next to Jayne’s, since that’s what she asked me to do. “I’ll sit here until you get inside.”
“You really are a gentleman.” She leans over and our mouths move together hungrily.
“Does tomorrow night work?”
She smiles. “Yes.”
“Where can I pick you up?”
She hesitates. “Let me think about it—I’ll text you later.”
“Good night, beautiful.”
“Thank you for…a wonderful evening.”
“You’re very welcome.”
I watch her hurry up the sidewalk and punch in a code to open the gate. Then she disappears into the darkness and I make a U-turn to head home.
I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into but there’s no turning back—and I couldn’t even if I wanted to.
It’s kind of crazy to think I’m falling for her.
It’s been a month.
We’re in dangerous territory—her father can destroy my career.
And yet there’s no doubt in my mind… I’m going to do it anyway.
