If I’d kept Quentin down on earth, I could have convinced the others to not look into her birth. We’d have been blissfully unaware. We could have continued like nothing happened and that could have still been the case if we didn’t have to worry about Archer sniffing around.
“I need to talk to her,” I said.
“Gray.”
“Erik, I just…” I couldn’t describe it, and Erik looked worried.
“Let me read you,” he said quietly.
“No! No. That’s not happening.”
I jerked away from my brother as he put his hands out towards me. Turning my back on him, I walked straight over to Ig and Quen.
“I’ll take it from here,” I said, reaching the pair.
“No,” Quen said simply.
“Scott.”
“You’re going to cause a scene,” Ig warned us both.
They broke apart, and I looked at Scott.
“I think it’s in everyone’s interest, Scott,” Ig said. “You’re not the only one who gets jealous.” Ig kissed her cheek, and my aura sparked. “Get over yourself.” He laughed, knocking his shoulder into mine as he left.
I controlled my aura and offered Quen my hand. After a few moments, she took it and I led her out of the throne room. The entire ground floor was filled with people, so I took the steps down to the basement and pulled her into a room.
“What are you playing at?” I demanded once the door was closed.
We were facing each other, and my words echoed in the space.
“I’m not playing at anything,” she said.
“That display with Archer?”
“I went looking for you and I couldn’t find you and then…” She trailed off.
“What?”
“I walked in on Hunter with… I don’t know who, but it wasn’t Larkin. Does she know that he’s with other people?”
I groaned, rubbing my temples. I wished my older brother would try to be discreet about it.
“Yes. Larkin knows,” I confirmed.
“And she lets him?!”
“She got the ring and the position so she couldn’t care less.”
“That’s awful!”
“They make it work,” I said, trying to get us back on track. “You stay away from Archer from now on.”
“You can’t tell me what to do.”
“You don’t know him! He tries to stir up trouble.”
“A lot of people say the same thing about you.”
