“Six minutes,” Kristen said with a satisfied sigh as she took her first bite.

“Right,” he said, slowly exhaling before he met her gaze, noticeably swallowed and said, “I really fucked this up.”

Since she couldn’t argue with that, Kristen took another bite as she gestured for him to continue. She watched as he reached up and rubbed the back of his neck as he admitted, “I honestly have no fucking clue what I’m supposed to say to make this right.”

Nodding absently, Kristen took her time finishing off the delicious treat, doing her best to savor every delicious bite. When she finally came to the last bite, Kristen bit back a disappointed sigh, closed her eyes and popped the combination of baked coconut, marshmallow, chocolate cake, and creamy filling in her mouth. She took a moment to enjoy that one perfect bite before she reluctantly swallowed it, opened her eyes, and said, “Four minutes.”

“I’m sorry,” Garrett said, swallowing hard.

“For…” Kristen said, letting the word trail off as she reached for her milkshake.

“Everything?” he said with a hopeful look.

“I’m really going to need you to narrow it down for me,” she said, taking a sip as she watched him open his mouth to say something, close it abruptly and-

“Two minutes,” Kristen said, once again gesturing for him to get on with it.

“For being an asshole?” Garrett said with that same hopeful look that had her shaking her head with a sigh because this just wouldn’t do.

“Do you have another Snoball?” Kristen asked, taking another sip of her delicious milkshake while she sat there, considering the man who destroyed her life.

“Not on me,” Garrett said, looking at a loss for words.

“One minute,” Kristen pointed out, watching as he absently nodded and-

“Is there any chance that you’ll forgive me?”

“Not a chance in hell.”

“I can fix this,”Garrett said, slowly exhaling as he rubbed his hands roughly down his face before he dropped his hands away and-

“Didn’t you run her out of town?” came the absently murmured question that had him wincing when he found the adorable woman, who’d been making it a habit to break into his house and help herself to his books since he moved in, curled up on the couch with what appeared to be a book on constitutional law on her lap and her newborn twins fast asleep in their stroller by her side.

Clearing his throat, Garrett said, “That was a misunderstanding.”

“And the deeply disturbing clown that tried to run you over with his van?” Joey, his cousin Reed’s wife and the woman who sold him this house, absently asked, not bothering to look up as she turned a page of the book that nearly destroyed his soul when he was forced to read it during his first year of law school.

“Was another misunderstanding,” Garrett said as he made his way around his desk and dropped down in the desk chair.

“Did you try apologizing?” Joey asked as she turned the page.

“She didn’t want to hear it,” Garrett said, slowly exhaling as he dropped his head back and-

“I have no fucking idea how I’m supposed to fix this.”

“Can you really blame her?” came the absently murmured question as Garrett stared up at the ceiling.

“Not even a little fucking bit,” Garrett said, thinking about everything that he’d put Kristen through over the years and-

He really was an asshole.

“What’s the plan?” Joey asked while Garrett sat there debating his next move.

“Make this right,” he said because walking away wasn’t an option this time.
