“Welp ladies, that’s the last of it,” Kevin said breaking me from my thoughts as he closed the back of the U-Haul truck.

“Whew, thank God! I can barely feel my arms and legs at this point,” Dawn complained causing us all to laugh at her.

They all had been helping me move all day, but Kevin and his cousin Troy did the bulk of it.

“We’re only halfway done, sis.” I chuckled to Dawn. “I can’t thank you guys enough. Here,” I said as I gave Kevin and Troy each a closed envelope that contained $200 in each one for them helping me. “I know that it’s not much and we are not done yet, but I wanted to make sure that I didn’t forget to give these to y’all.”

“What is this?” Kevin and Troy both asked at the same time.

Looking into the envelopes they both looked up at me with frowns on their faces.

“I told you that you don’t need to pay me to help you move,” Kevin fussed.

“Right, pretty lady,” Troy said. “Keep ya money. If you want to repay me, you can hook me up with your sister instead.” Troy smiled then winked his eye at Dawn, causing her to blush and me and Kevin to laugh.

They handed me their envelopes back. “I told you we good. I would much rather help you than to have to worry about you paying someone to do a half ass job. I told you, Ava, I got you, babe,” Kevin professed winking his eye at me, then patting me on the shoulder while giving it a slight squeeze. “You and Dawn can follow us in your car down to the house so that we can unload it and return the truck back to U-Haul before they close tonight. Once we’re done, you can maybe get dinner while we help you set up your furniture and unpack.”

“Aren’t you just the sweetest!” Dawn thanked Kevin. “You’re so perfect for my sister.”

Giving Dawn the side-eye while trying to be discreet, I smiled and said, “Just like you and Troy would make such a beautiful couple!” Dawn hushed her mouth and blushed something serious, while the rest of us laughed.

After Kevin locked up his house, Dawn and I got into my car then followed behind Kevin and Troy. Troy was driving the moving truck and Kevin was driving his SUV that was filled with my stuff as well. The whole way there all Dawn could talk about was Troy as I sat there and tried to concentrate on what she was saying. I was deep in thought about how much my life had changed so drastically in just a short period of time.

DAWN

“Ican’t believe you just said that crazy! I told you not to say anything.” I complained as my sister just sat there with a silly grin on her face.

“I didn’t say anything. In fact, Troy was the one to bring up you and him hooking up first. You was the one that started it with Kevin and me.”

“I was just speaking facts.”

“So was I.” Ava laughed.

“I just don’t want to look desperate to no nigga ‘cause desperate is something I’m not.”

“Who said anything bout you looking desperate? You need to lighten up for real, sis. That man is obviously interested in you. You need to stop playing.”

“I’m not playing. I’m just not anxious to be in no relationship is all.”

“Who said anything about y’all being in a relationship? You be doin’ the most sometimes. I swear you blocking your own happiness. Y’all can exchange numbers and just talk. It doesn’t have to be anything more than that.”

“I don’t know. The last time I exchanged numbers and tried to get to know a man, he turned out to be on the DL, fucking onyour husband and shit. I couldn’t believe it when Tate snapped out on Justin in the hospital that day, revealing that they were fucking in the booty as well. Like, who the fuck would’ve ever thought that shit! So, pardon me if I’m not chomping at the bits to be all up in a man’s face right now,” I defended.

“So, you sayin’ because of Tate, someone who you weren’t really feeling like that in the first place, you are now no longer interested in men? But at the same time, I’m the one that was in a full-blown marriage with Justin, and I should be jumping Kevin’s bones? That doesn’t make any sense.”

“I ain’t sayin’ all of that! I’m just saying I’m not anxious to be in no relationship. You and Kevin are different. Y’all have known each other for some time. Me and Troy just met today.”

“I get that, but you, steady keep insisting that Kevin and I hook up, so...”

“That’s because you’re a hopeless romantic. I’m not, and I don’t have the desire to be.”

“All women want that happily ever after, stop frontin’, sis,” Ava retorted.

To a certain extent she was correct. I guess I had just accepted the fact that love wasn’t in the cards for me, so I was good with being single.

“I don’t know, sis, happily ever after ain’t for everyone,” I replied. “I can’t lie though. Troy is one sexy ass Lance Gross looking man, good lawd.”

“I’m trying to tell you, chile.” Ava giggled. “Troy is fine as hell! You need to snatch that thang on up before someone else does.”
