“Xander figured that out. It saves time by about twenty minutes, and that’s a godsend for our staff.”
“Wow! He really likes to go into detail. He’s good at cost cutting.”
“Always. So, do you know what you want?”
I grinned. “Of course! The famous jambalaya.”
“You know what, I’ll get that too. Even though I have it pretty often.”
“You come here to eat?” I asked.
“No, but Isabeau cooks it regularly. She’s very proud of her recipe, and the staff follows it to a T to this day.”
I rubbed my palms together. “Even better.”
The waiter came a moment later and took our order.
After he left, I sighed, looking around. “I’ve got to bring my parents here sometime. They’d love it.”
“I’ll make it happen. Just tell me when.”
“Ha ha. You just said it’s easier to get a table for two than for a bigger group.”
“I’ll make it happen.”
I smiled. “Thanks. That will make them happy. Fred never…” Icleared my throat, looking down at my hands. Why on earth would I bring him up?
Beckett looked at me intently. “Fred?”
“My ex-boyfriend.”
“Tell me about him.”
I rolled my shoulders back. “Really? Why?”
“I don’t know anything about your dating life prior to me.”
“I could say the same about you.”
He scoffed. “I wasn’t exactly dating. I was just… what was it? Man-whoring.”
I burst out laughing. “Really? You had tosearchfor the word?”
“Nah, I was just wondering if I should put it in a more polite way, but why sugarcoat it? So, how about you?”
“Fred and I dated for ten years.”
Beckett’s eyes went wide.
I lowered my gaze. “Yeah.”
“So, what happened?” he asked as the waiter put a basket of fresh bread and spreads in front of us, along with our drinks.
I sighed. “It fell apart. He realized after all that time that he didn’t actually want to marry me or have kids with me.”
“He waited ten years to figure that out? That’s fucked up.”
“I know.”
