“Um, yes, we are,” Renee said, and the fire on her face was apparent now. Her confidence was shaking.

So was mine.

“Hey,” the guy said, offering his hand to me. “I’m Jason, Renee’s boyfriend.”

I don’t shake his hand. I only smiled at him until it fell back to his side because if I didn’t smile, I’d probably bloody this dumbass guy’s face until he resembled nothing more than a smashed melon.

“Boyfriend,” I repeated, rage sizzling just below the surface of my skin. I fought hard to keep my voice steady as I turned to Renee. “You’re quite the popular one, aren’t you?”

“You know what, Matt? Fuck you.” If I thought she couldn’t blush any redder, I was wrong. Her eyes cast to the floor, and she mumbled something I couldn't make out to Jason as he took her hand and kissed her cheek. The entire time he did this, his eyes were on me.

A personal challenge.

But I didn’t care.

I didn’t care about him.

Nothing would stand in my way, especially not this fucking guy.

“I guess I’ll see you around,” I said to Renee, ignoring Jason. “Have fun at the library.”

Before either of them could say anything else, I winked, turned around, and walked away, unable to keep my lips from curling into a smirk. Jason was all wrong for her.Hewas the douchebag. And within time, she’d figure that out.

Chapter 16

Aaron

Attracting girls' attentionhad never been one of the things I was good at.

At least, that’s what Matt and Jake said.

But I liked girls. No, no. I fucking loved girls.

I was just not as ‘on-par’ with the flirting and the arrogance and the whole ‘be a douchebag, and they will come’ motto that my friends seemed to hold to an exceptionally high standard.

Trying to get Renee’s attention hadn’t proved better for me than any other time I’d tried to hit on a woman and failed. To be fair, brooding Matt and cocky-ass Jake didn’t seem to have any better luck, so I guess I was still in the running. Maybe even second place instead of third with how she looked at Matt like she was dreaming of all the ways she could slowly kill him and drop his remains in the ocean.
