“No, I can’t.Not yet.We haven’t talked about it, but I took some tests several weeks ago and they were all positive.We’re going to have a baby, and I know this might not be something you want, so I’m going to give you an out.You don’t have to be part of our baby’s life if you don’t want to.”
She didn’t know why she was doing this.The truth was, she wanted him to stay.
“Katie, I can’t do this with a door between us.”
“Please, could you give me ...some space, I just ...I need to freshen up.”She was being a bitch, and she knew it.
“Sure,” he said.
She was pretty sure he placed his hand on the door, as if he could reach out and touch her, but she got to her feet, moved the short distance to the sink, and glanced at her reflection.It was not pretty.She looked pale and a little green around the edges.There was no way she was going to be able to face Hawk like this.She looked terrible.
Splashing some water on her face, she pressed a towel to dry her face, then brushed her teeth.With all the vomiting, she had purchased an extra toothbrush and paste for the shop to freshen her mouth.The last thing she wanted to do was frighten the customers away with her stinky breath.
Taking one last look in the mirror, she nodded her head and stepped out of the bathroom.The shop floor was completely empty, and there was no sign of Hawk.And that felt like her whole world had deflated.
She moved toward the door and saw he’d put a sign up saying they’d be back soon.She flipped it to let people know they were open, all the time feeling her heart break.
