“No,” he said. “But she’s here, so I can’t very well send her back.”
“No, I guess not.” I smiled. “I’m okay, honey. So are the babies.”
“I’d feel a fuck of a lot better if you’d eat.”
“Okay. I’ll try and eat something,” I said. “Besides, I believe I have a Connect Four game to lose to Kinsey.”
He smiled, but I could tell it was forced, and kissed me. “I’m still debating if I should take you to the hospital.”
“I’m good. You said so yourself. You’ve given me an ultrasound, checked every bruise and bump on my body, and done everything they’d do at the hospital.” I cupped his face. “I don’t want to go anywhere right now. I want to stay here where I know both of us are safe.”
“If anything—”
“Changes, I’ll let you know,” I interrupted. “I promise.”
“Come on, let’s see if we can’t get some protein into your body,” he said.
I nodded and we headed back to the great room. Doc made his way to the kitchen, while I sat in the overstuffed chair next to the sofa where Jasmine and Alamo were snuggling.
“Is that Raquel?” Jasmine asked, nodding toward the door to the foyer.
“Probably,” I said, just as Raquel walked over to us, Rabbit right behind her.
Doc’s sister was a stunning brunette, petite, curvy, with big blue eyes, and I could tell Rabbit was having a hard time keeping his eyes off her. I’d imagine he was probably having a hard time keeping his hands off her as well.
“Room for one more?” she asked, hugging me, then, Jasmine.
“Always,” I said.
“Where’s Tristan?” she asked.
“He’s making food.” I glanced up to see Doc walking toward us with a plate and a soda.
He grinned, handing me the food and drink, then hugging his sister. “How was your flight?”
“It was fine,” she said. “But I’m kind of tired. Do you care if I turn in?”
“Not at all,” Doc said. “You know where you’re going?”
She grinned. “Unless I can sleep in the bunny hutch, then yes.”
“Jesus Christ,” Doc hissed, and I bit back a laugh. “Go to bed. Your shit’s already been taken up to your room.”
“Thanks, Tris.” She kissed his cheek, then hugged me. “Night.”
She headed upstairs and I glanced at Doc. “Was that weird? Raquel never goes to bed before ten. It’s barely nine o’clock. You should go make sure she’s okay.”
“If she needs me, she’ll tell me,” he said, sitting beside me. “Eat.”
“I’m eating.” I rolled up a piece of turkey and popped it in my mouth. As soon as I took the first bite, I was suddenly starving and finished the plate.
“Good girl.” Doc grinned, handing me my prenatal vitamin and an anti-nausea pill. “Better?”
“Yes. Thanks, honey.”
Doom and Lyric walked in, Doom carrying a baby monitor and I couldn’t stop myself from glaring up at him, even though I wasn’t really pissed at him anymore.
“I’m not apologizing,” he said, sitting on one of the overstuffed chairs and pulling Lyric onto his lap.
