“In a manner of speaking.” The truth was, I’d been working on Harmony’s case most of the day, without much luck. I’d also been trying to wrap my mind around the fact I was bummed out Harmony hadn’t called or texted. It’s not like I had expected her to, but I was still disappointed. “Where’s Cass?” I asked.
“Puttin’ Tillie down.”
Carter and Cassidy had three kids. Maverick, Liam, and Tillie. They had their hands full, but I was glad Carter was finally happy. He’d spent a hellava lot of years being separated from the only woman he loved and it took a hellava lot of work to get back to her.
“Hey, Jax,” Cassidy said as she walked out to join us.
“Hey, babe,” I said, and hugged her. “How’s Tillie?”
“Feisty,” she breathed out. “She didnotwant to miss out on the fun.”
“I get it.” I chuckled. “Where’s Mav?”
“He’s hanging with Lily tonight at Hawk and Payton’s.”
“Yeah? The marriage contract’s been signed?”
Maverick and Lily had been in love with each other since they were little and it would appear it wasn’t stopping anytime soon.
Cassidy grinned. “Pretty much. Maverick’s got his proposal all planned out and everything.”
“No shit?”
“No shit. I have a feeling he’ll do it the second she graduates.”
“And what does Hawk say?”
“Oh, we keep that tidbit of information from Hawk. Maverick needs his face to stay pretty.”
I laughed. “No doubt.”
“Now, it’s time for wine.”
“Already poured you a glass,” Carter said, snagging it from the outdoor table, and handing it to her.
“This is why I love you best.”
“Because I do everything in my power to get you drunk?”
“Yes. Absolutely,” she said, and stood on her tiptoes to kiss him.
He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close.
I’d had half a beer and was helping Kim carry dishes to the table when my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Harmony. I answered immediately. “You okay?”
“No,” she whispered. “There was another present.”
“You sound freaked.”
“It was a dead rat.”
My blood ran cold. “Where are you?”
“At the hotel.” I heard her sniff, like she was holding back tears.
“Harmony?”
“They left it outside our suite. They know where we are.”
