“Yeah. Infectious, let’s go with that.”
I didn’t know Luke well enough to figure out if he was laughing with me or at me, but my face must’ve given my confusion away. “Don’t pout,” he said as his hand clamped down on my knee. “It’s cute. Seeing you all passionate and feisty.”
Before I could reply, a t-shirt cannon was fired in our direction barely clearing my head and causing the guy with the huge foam finger in the row behind us to topple forward and end up in Luke’s lap. Soda went everywhere. Cries echoed. Someone in front of us was bitching and complaining and blaming everyone for the fact they dropped their hotdog.
Once the craziness settled down, I excused myself to go to the bathroom and ducked off. As soon as I was in the corridor, I dug my phone from my pocket and called Hannah. She couldn’t believe it. I could barely believe it, and I knew if I didn’t tell her now, I’d forget the insaneness of the whole thing.
A quick pit stop later, and I was weaving my way back through the seats to find Luke still trying to mop up the soda spill from the crotch of his jeans with a wad of paper napkins.
“Why are you smiling?” he asked, holding down my chair for me to sink into.
“Are you having fun?”
“With you, yes. Looking like I pissed myself, not so much.”
“What if I told you I’ve got a better offer?
“When you say a better offer?” He didn’t look convinced. In fact, he looked more than a little scared which only made everything even more fun.
Taking his hand, I bounced back to my feet, ignored the protest from the people in the seats behind, and led him up the stairs and back onto the concourse.
“Where are you taking me? I mean, I’m not saying I’m not into finding the nearest supply closet …”
“Good to know,” I said with a wink as we walked through almost empty corridors.
Music was pumping through the sound system and the cheers were muffled.
“Charlotte …”
“You remember I told you I knew Mason Flynn?”
“Sort of …”
“Well, his wife Hannah, she’s actually my best friend.”
“Okay.”
“And when I spoke to her a minute ago she invited us to come join her in the private box.”
“Private box?” Luke’s high-pitched voice made him sound like a five-year-old girl.
“Yep. She’s about twenty months pregnant, completely over it and apparently Mason set her up there with a babysitter who’s driving her nuts. She’s invited us to hang out.” It wasn’t until I said it that I started to panic. Shit! We were supposed to be on a date or hanging out or whatever, and I just told him we were about to get a chaperone. “You don’t mind, do you? I mean, I can call her and tell her I changed my mind,” I started backtracking.
Luke stopped walking and I almost fell on my ass. Righting myself, I turned to face Luke who had the biggest grin on his cute face.
“Charlotte, stop stressing. This is gonna be fun,” he assured me before cupping my cheek and leaning in and giving me a kiss that lingered and left me wanting more.
“Are you sure?”
“Is there beer?”
“And free food,” I added.
“Well, what are we waiting for? Lead the way!”
When I spun around Luke slapped my butt before winding his arm around my waist, holding me against him, making me wonder how serious he was about that supply closet.
It didn’t take long to find where we needed to be and when I called Hannah, she waddled out to help us get past security with a sour-looking girl trailing her.
