Enzo opened his mouth but then promptly closed it. Then, he gave me a nod. “I’ll try. I…I can't make any promises. It seems I'm not able to keep them. I promised you I would never hurt you, and I did. God, Em. I’m so, so, so sorry.”
He’d barely finished talking before I flung myself into his arms. Thankfully, Ryker made sure I didn’t fall while doing so. It took Enzo by surprise, but after a moment, he wrapped his arms around me.
I didn’t care how awkward I looked, pressed up against him. The two of us were an odd pair as it was.
“Please say you forgive me.”
Pulling back so I could see his stormy eyes, I waited a moment to answer. I knew in my heart that I’d always forgive him. He was my Enzo.
“Forgive you.”
The relief on his face seemed lift years of stress from his shoulders.
Emery
“C
ome take a nap with me?”
Looking at the man who was my entire world, no matter what life choices we would make, I could see just how tired he was. Dark circles were under his eyes. When we could now both get the sleep we needed to function like real humans, it was out of place.
I nodded, even though I was sure I wouldn’t be able to sleep anymore. I’d lie with him for however long he needed, though. I knew he’d do the same for me. He had, actually.
Without words being spoken, Enzo stood first and grabbed my hand. I looked over my shoulder. Ryker and Scarlett were talking by the front door in hushed voices—most likely about us, but whatever it was, we’d find out eventually.
That was one thing Scarlett had promised. She would never keep important information from us.
In the bedroom, I followed Enzo onto the bed, where I wrapped myself around him as much as he did me.
With one hand under my head, I didn’t stop myself from running the fingers of my other hand along his face. I could remember when his face was covered in bruises. I knew the scar under his hair would still be there from the time a man threw him against the wall for talking back.
“Steven didn’t win.” His words may have been quiet, but they were filled with a truth both of us knew.
I didn’t know what to say. Steven may not have won, but the monster he’d planted in my mind was.
“We’re free, Em.”
“I don’t think we’ll ever be free like we were before Steven.”
“We can go out whenever. Get jobs. Be happy.”
“I want that. Happy, I mean.”
“I can be happy as long as I have you, Emery Ray.” With that, he pressed forward to push his lips roughly against mine.
Instantly, I opened my mouth, our tongues touching. My hand went to the back of his head, his hand on my arm. The desperate kiss turned slow, loving, but just as heated as the roughness and demanding kiss from moments before.
A moan low in my throat was coaxed out as Enzo’s hand landed around my hips, pulling me closer. My eyes slipped closed, feeling a different need soar through my body. A need I hadn’t felt in a long time.
“Enzo.” I didn’t know how to tell him, or even ask.
Of course, he knew exactly what I wanted.
“Just feel, baby.” His husky words were spoken against my lips. “Let me take care of you.”
I put everything I had into kissing him. My lips molded to his. Both of our tongues battled against the other. I took what he gave, then stole more.
Before I could lose my breath, Enzo pulled back just enough to trail his lips down to my neck. I fell onto my back a bit more, giving him the room to press his lower body into mine.
