“Oh, Scarlett,” he said, a sigh on his lips.
Could he feel my pain, my worry?
“I’m okay,” he said. “I’ll be fine.”
“But you aren’t,” I said, lifting my head up. “You were drugged, Dominic. You could have died.”
“I didn’t, though,” he said, making sure that I understood that part. “I’m still breathing. My heart is beating. I’mfine.”
“But—”
“I’m fine, Scarlett. Well, I will be. I promise,” he said. He moved his hand to my cheek, cupping it in his palm. His thumb ran under one eye, wiping away the tears that wouldn’t stop. My eyes closed at the touch.
God, what were these men doing to me?
I peeled my eyes open, meeting his burning gaze. I could see he wanted to say something but warred with himself. Instead, after a deep sigh, he removed his hand, placing it on my hip. My head had a mind of its own, burying into his chest once again.
“Take a nap with me.”
I didn’t think I’d be able to move. I felt safe—protected—here with him. I knew I shouldn’t. I shouldn’t want to feel safe with anyone after everything. But with Dominic, I knew I’d be okay. At least for the moment.
I knew the exact moment when Zevon crawled into bed behind me. I felt the bed dip and heard Dominic groan while pulling me closer to his chest.
“Sleep in your own bed,” Dominic whispered harshly.
“Can’t. It’s taken.”
“By whom?”
“Your new friend.”
Dominic huffed, pulling me closer, it if were even possible. “Don’t wake her.”
“I won’t,” Zevon whispered back.
Moments later, Zevon cuddled up behind me. His hand was placed inches above Dominic’s. I could practically feel the two glaring at each other over the top of my head.
I would have moved, said something, anything. I would have, if I weren’t so comfortable.
“What did you get yourself into?” Zevon whispered after a few quiet minutes.
“No clue. I didn’t mean to…well, do what I did. I was just looking for a release.”
“You should know going to that bar wasn’t one of your smartest choices.”
“Yeah…well…”
They both trailed off again. My mind was calm, quiet. I was warm and comfortable.
I was just about to doze back off when I felt a pair of lips press against the top of my head, then another.
Where they both trying to mark their territories?
“Why don’t you just both pee on me and get it over with?” I muttered, not moving.
At my words, they both cracked up laughing.
“Didn’t mean to wake you,” Zevon whispered once he could get the words past his lips.
