“How about you go get some sleep, honey,” Collin said.

“Where’s Wyatt?” I asked before a yawn tore out of me.

“He took my bed. I’ll take him back to town later when I pick up an item I won,” Zevon answered. “And, no I don’t know what I won. It was out for maintenance or something.” He waved his hand in the air. “Pick up is at noon.”

“I don’t like him being here,” I muttered, leaning against the counter, my hands wrapped around my waist. “Is he who he says he is?”

“Already called that in. Yes, he’s working for Ace. Apparently, this drug deal is bigger than I can handle,” Zevon huffed. “Of course, I guess after last night, I shouldn’t complain.”

“Okay,” I said, still not sure.

“He won’t be here often,” Collin said, quickly catching onto my thoughts. “He has his own place in town. Everything checks out. You know Ace wouldn’t have pulled him if he was going to even think about laying a hand on you, Scarlett.”

“Sorry,” I sighed, dropping my head.

“There’s no reason to be sorry,” Zevon said as he stood up and made his way over to me. When he was inches from me, he tipped my head up by a single finger. “You have the right to worry after everything you’ve been through.Neverapologize for that.”

“Kay.”

Before I could react, Zevon pressed his lips to my forehead. He kept them there for a moment before stepping back. His eyes were alight with something I couldn’t name.

“Go get some sleep, Scarlett.”

“I’ll try,” I said, my eyes dropping to the floor. How the heck was I to try to sleep now, after Zevon showing me such affection?

He moved back to the table and took a heavy seat. I was about to tell him that he needed sleep too, but I decided against it. Instead, I took slow, shuffled steps towards my room. When I reached Dominic’s room, I stopped in the open doorway.

How had I not heard him?

Dominic sat on the bed, hunched over a trashcan in his lap. His red-rimmed eyes glanced up at me before he blew out a breath.

I didn’t think twice about walking towards him, taking the trash can and setting it down on the floor, as it seemed like he was finished puking his guts out for the moment. I then handed him the bottle of water. His fingers closed over mine for a moment before he grasped it from me and took a small sip.

“I’m not gonna ask,” he muttered, laying back down on the bed with a groan.

“You don’t remember?” I kept my voice low.

He shook his head gently before his tired gaze met mine. “Come here.” He held out a hand on the other side of him, an indication for me to at least keep him company.

I debated for a moment, his eyes watching my every move. I fiddled where I stood, not sure what I should do.

“Come on,” he said, patting the bed when I still didn’t move.

Finally, my feet carried me to the other side of the bed. I gently crawled up next to Dominic, using my arm as a pillow. Once I was comfortable enough, he turned to face me and just stared at me. His eyes spoke of so many things, I couldn’t pinpoint what was going on in his head.

“Did you stay up all night?” he asked finally.

“Maybe,” I said with a tired blink.

“Scarlett,” he sighed. “Why?”

I dropped my eyes, which landed on his cotton-covered chest. I could do nothing to stop the tears from clouding my vision.

Instantly, Dominic had me pulled tight against his chest, his chin on my head. I breathed in his scent as my tears fell, soaking his shirt. They came harder at his hug.

“I’m fine,” he soothed, flexing his arm around me.

“Don’t ever do that again,” I cried. I had no clue if he could understand the words. “You scared me.”
