The bright, warm smile that reaches his eyes makes my heart speed up. He needs to stop looking at me like that. Him, on his knees, is going to be the death of me.
I feel like I have tunnel vision, and all I can see is him staring up at me. The noise from the passing cars and birds flying overhead all but fade away. The only thing I hear is the sound of my beating heart… Loud, very loud!Am I having some kind of mental break?
Shaking myself out of the haze, I give him a smile and a small chuckle.
“And no one lost any fingers,” he says with a fist pump.
“You still got three more screws left to do,” I say, giving him a hard time.
He hangs his head. “Fine, but we are tempting fate here.”
I chuckle.
I start the last three screws like I did the first one, and when Spencer finishes, he stands up and high fives me. The sheer happiness that overtakes him is contagious.
“I can’t believe I did it, and the earth did not even open up and swallow me whole. Plus, look, I still have all my fingers,” he says, wiggling them in front of me, but I’m still stuck on the ‘swallow me whole’ part.
Okay, maybe I need to get laid or something because my mind has been in the gutter. Although, I’m quite enjoying the gutter at the moment.
Absentmindedly, I raise my hand up, running the pad of my thumb on his cheek. His eyes grow big. Fuck, I drop my hand and clear my throat.
“You had some sawdust.”
“Thank you,” he says in a half whisper.
I nod my head, then move around him to put tools away. Spencer spins around, then asks, “Can I at least buy you dinner? The Diner down the street has amazing crab tacos. Plus, then I can also feel like I contributed a little.”
“You contributed. That last step was all you,” I say with a laugh. “But, yeah, dinner sounds good.” And of course, right on schedule. My stomach rumbles and we both laugh.
“Would you mind if I put this stuff away and hop in the shower? I’m covered in sawdust,” I say, shaking out my hair.
“Of course. I should check back in with Jules and make sure she doesn’t need anything before we head out,” he says, bouncing on the heels of his feet. “I could probably also use time to freshen up.”
“Okay, does 30 minutes work?”
“Perfect,” he says as he slowly walks backwards to the door. “You know where to find me.”
“Yeah, I do,” I say with a chuckle just as he turns and runs right into the door.
“I’m okay!” he shouts, not turning back to look at me as he finally walks through the door.
It makes me chuckle one more time. Staying away from Spencer is going to be a lot harder than it looks.
CHAPTER7
Spencer
Smooth Spencer, real smooth. I mean, I absolutely had that; I was cool, calm, and collected, right until the end. Who does not know how to open a door? Me, apparently! I have strolled through that door since I was 12 and never had a problem.
Today, it seems, the gods thought, oh, what, you didn’t lose a finger today? Let me remedy that with a door to the face. I couldn’t even glance at him afterwards.
I need to put that minor incident to the back of my mind. On the bright side, no one got wounded, plus I kept up a reasonable conversation. Last but not least I, Spencer McCallum, asked him out to dinner.
Oh my god, what did I just do?My mind is racing through all the scenarios where I completely embarrass myself in front of the sexiest man on the planet.
I can do this. It will be fine.
There is this sense of ease when I’m around him. Everything slows down a bit. I can breathe. He laughs with me. It never seems to be directed at me.
