“Well, way to bring down the room, Bails.” She throws her hands up, exasperated.
“By asking what you’re going to do?” I furrow my brow, confused how my question was a problem to her.
“Yes, that’s the type of negativity that’s not needed here. Youcan make it up to me by telling me about what has happened with Wes.”
“Do you have cameras watching me or something?” I glance around my house because I’m starting to think her sources are herself and she has some spy equipment on me.
“That was a trap! Aha, so somethinghashappened!”
Sutton leans to the side so she can give me a raised eyebrow look.
“I just wanted to have a nice calm girls night. I didn’t think it would include getting the third degree from you two,” I grumble.
“That’s what a girls nightis, silly.” Lily chuckles. “We share all our secrets and give each other advice.”
I huff out a breath, not really wanting to get into the Wes stuff when my mind still hasn’t caught up on all of it. I don’t think I could talk about it even if I tried right now.
“Sutton, anything to share or need advice on?” I ask.
She shakes her head. “Not really, everything is pretty good right now for me.”
“Wellgoodforyou,” Lily jokes sarcastically. “I shared about my new beau, so I guess that only leaves you, Bails.”
“Still not my name,” I grumble.
They both look at me, and I avoid their gazes as best I can, but the feeling of their eyes burning into me is bound to make mebreak. Instead of giving them the full story, I decide to give them just enough so they will leave me alone for now.
“I saw Wes at the bar when I went there for line dancing. We danced, came home. Nothing happened.” The lie feels bitter on my tongue becausea lothappened.
“Nothing happened? Not even a smooch?” Lily clearly doesn’t believe me. She shouldn’t.
“Not even a smooch.” I don’t know what pains me more, saying that word or lying about it happening.
“Well that’s boring,” she huffs.
“Guess I’m just a boring person.” I shrug, hoping she’ll let it go. When I look at Sutton, she’s giving me a look that says she doesn’t believe me, but Lily has already moved on and is talking about something she saw at school that I think included a chicken crossing the road. No, it’s not even the punch line of a joke.
CHAPTER 26
Wes
I don’t needto help out at Jameson’s property now that he’s back, but it’s a part of my routine. He comes out while I’m finishing up with the horses, and I nod at him in greeting.
“How’d it go around here?” he asks.
“Good, no one gave me too much trouble.”No one here, anyway.
“That’s good, I know Juniper can be such a troublemaker,” he jokes.
“Oh yeah, they all can be such a problem,” I deadpan.
“Are you doing anything later? Dave and Parker are coming over because Sutton insists I have a ‘guy’s night.’”
“Uh, no I don’t have plans, but you enjoy.”
“Come on over, if you’re free. I think the girls are going toBailey’s house, so unless you want to hear them, you may be safer over here.”
Part of me would love to hear them, just so I can know if Bailey says anything to her friends about what happened between us. If she lets anything slip out about how it felt for her. If it made her feel like everything has changed, like it has for me.
