He shrugged. “Don’t know. I guess so, if you were a vampire and drank…” He looked up at the sky. “Suns out, you’re not a Royal? You’re a witch, right? I know a witch when I see one.”

A sick feeling flooded through me as the truth sank in, remembering Marina’s words about how the man would stay there for days at a time. “I saw some guy get killed there. Some of his blood”—I shuddered—“a lot of his blood got in my mouth and stuff.”

Told you that you were going to like it.

I tried to ignore the voice but was unable to pause the dread flowing through me.

“Yeah, I guess that could do it, if he’d been doing the shit.” His fingers traced the top of my pubic hair.

I lay back down, swatting his hand away. I’d had sex that I didn’t consent to and barely remembered. I had some other guy’s blood in me. “Am I gonna be sick?”

“I don’t know. You look better to me. I think you’re past the puke-risk stage.”

I sat back up, anger coursing through me, the too quick rise not making the world dance this time. “No, asshole. Am I gonna be sick? I have some dude’s blood in me”—I gestured at him in disgust—“and you fucking me when I’m not even conscious.” My voice rose. “What if I’m sick? And I don’t mean vomiting!”

The fairy’s voice rose to match my own. “Whoa, slow down! And cut the name-calling. You weren’t unconscious, and I didn’t technically fuck you.”

“I was high enough to think I was flying. I’d say that counts as unconscious.”

“Youwereflying. That’s how it works, andagain, I’ve never seen anyone on that drug that wasn’t looking for a good time. I was just going with it.” He grabbed my dick and gave a quick jerk. “I wasn’t the one wandering around the city with my erection pointing at everybody.” I started to interrupt, but he cut me off. “And you didn’t know you were on Spor, well, tough shit. Don’t hang around at a place where that shit is going on. That’s the risk you take!”

I felt like I’d been slapped. That’s exactly what my dad would say—if you hang out at the Square, you take your chances and deserve what comes to you. My worry gave way to the numb sensation of dismay and guilt. When had I turned into this?

“Whoa, dude. I’m sorry. Don’t cry.” He reached out and wiped his thumb under my left eye. I hadn’t even realized I was crying. He let out a deep breath. “Listen, I shouldn’t have said that. You say that you didn’t know you were on anything, and I’m sure it’s horrible to come back to this dull reality only to find you’d been having sex with someone and didn’t know it.” His hands fell to his sides, his shoulders slumping.

We stared at each other. I believed him. He didn’t know my situation. He couldn’t have. Still, he was a fairy. The little I knew about fairies was that they are wicked at their worst, mischievous at their best, and always up for a party. This one didn’t seem wicked, more like a caricature of a “ladies’ man” of the gay variety.

His voice was soft and more soothing than I’d heard it yet. “You’re not sick, by the way.”

My eyes flashed to his.

“You’re fine. Really.” The right side of his lips curved into an attempt at a reassuring smile.

“You know you’re clean?” With an exhale, a small amount of worry flitted away. “That’s good. However, you don’t know about the other guy.”

The fairy nodded. “No, but you’re clean. I can tell.”

“There’s no way for you to know that. Even a blood test wouldn’t be able to tell me that yet. You don’t need to try to pacify me.”

“You don’t know much about fairies, do you?” His tone wasn’t accusatory. He was just stating a fact.

I shook my head.

“Well, short of giving you a lesson about my species, of which I’m a full-blood, thank you very much, let me assure you, you’re clean. I would know.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Really?”

“Really.”

Again, unsure why, I believed him.

We sat for a couple of minutes, both of us lost in our own thoughts. The weight of the fear of being sick was dissipating, but there was still way too much to take in. Too much had happened.

His voice broke through my worries. “So, can I give you that other blow job now?”

I couldn’t restrain my laughter. “Are you serious?”

He nodded, his lopsided grin taking on a devious tilt. “Why not? We’re both clean. I’m hot. You’re hot. It’s not like we haven’t done it before.”
