Sure enough, the world had resumed its rightful place when I opened my eyes, no more spinny-spinny. I looked over at my companion. He was a good-looking man. Older than me. Facial features that somehow grouped in an impossible combination of willowy and masculine. His gaze shifted over to meet my inspection. Huge, brownish yellow, almost reminding me of marigolds. They were the biggest eyes I’d ever seen on a person. Too large for his face, and looked, well, clean—like all other eyes I had seen had a film over them. He blinked, long black lashes covering the orbs then revealing them once more.
“What are you?”
His lips curved into a mocking grin, and his voice took on a playfully reproachful tone. “Come on now, witch. I let you see me in my true form, take care of you for well over a day, and all I’m met with is a ‘what are you?’ Use that pretty head of yours.” He glanced over and removed his hand. “And stop whatever spell you’re doing. If I’d wanted to hurt you, I could have done that hours ago.”
I hadn’t even realized I’d done a spell, but I could feel it all around me, guaranteeing me personal space. I didn’t call the power back into me, however. I took in his face as he peered down at me. The enormous sunflower eyes. Normal salt-and-pepper hair, longer on top, cut close on the sides. Slightly pointed ears. “No way.” I leaned closer. “Fairy?”
His eyes twinkled. “As are you.”
“You know what I mean. You’re a fairy. I’ve never spoken to one before.”
“Oh, I’m sure you have. They just didn’t want you to know it.” He reached out to brush more hair from my face and grimaced as my boundary still refused to be breached. “And yes, I’m a fairy fairy. Let’s talk about how unique that joke is. However, if you can come up with an original fairy joke my brothers haven’t yet invented, I’ll give you another blow job.”
“Another blow…?” I perched up on my elbows—the earth finally complying with the laws of nature—and looked down. “I’m naked.” I glanced over at him. “You’re naked.” I peered around and quickly covered myself with my hands, letting my protection spell fall away in my distraction. “We’re outside, and there are people right over there!”
“Relax.” He put his hand on my crotch, causing me to flinch. “By this point, I’m very familiar with what you have there, and no one else can see us. Or hear us.”
“They can’t?”
He gave me a withering look and another wry smile. “Do you really think I was gonna pass up hours of enjoying you in the midst of your pleasure roll? And you should thank me. You’re lucky I came along when I did. You were wandering all around Balboa Park without a stitch on. You were just begging to be arrested.”
I couldn’t respond. Balboa Park? How the hell did I get here? And where were my clothes? Enjoying me? Pleasure roll? Arrested?
“Breathe.” His other hand began to make circles on my back. “You don’t need to get yourself all worked up again. Man, you don’t come down from this very well. You might need to lay off the stuff for a while.”
“Lay off what stuff?”
A raised eyebrow. “Really? We’re playing that game? You were rolling like a champ, dude. You don’t need to pretend with me.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He narrowed his eyes, and I got a tingly feeling over my skin. “You’re not kidding, are you?”
I shook my head.
“You were on a major Spor trip.”
“What the hell is a Spor trip?”
He gave me a withering glare. “Spor. Lythrasporium. Really?”
Another shake of my head.
He held up his hands. “No judgment from me, mind you. Spor is the best shit ever. I love the stuff, but it’s a bit easier for a fairy than a witch to handle. You had to take a major hit to get the roll you had. If that’s your first time, you’re lucky to have come back down at all. You’re telling me you haven’t done it before?”
“Before?I haven’t done it now!”
He let out a snort. “Well, trust me, sweetheart, you’ve done it now. I’d know those signs anywhere. Bet you were seeing all sorts of pretty colors and feeling all close to Mother Nature, huh? Be glad you hadn’t made it to the ocean. I doubt anyone would have ever seen you again.” He glanced down at my lap. “Then there’s that perma-hard-on you were sporting. Spor for sure.”
I let his words sink in, then did a once-over of his naked body, without really taking in any of the details. “So, I wasn’t dreaming? All the colors, and the flying, and the… we had sex?”
A look of guilt flashed across his face. “Yeah. Lots of it. I’m sorry, handsome man. If I’d known it was your first time and you didn’t know what you were on… Typically, if someone’s taking that, we did exactly what they are looking for.”
My mind flitted from one thing to another. This man, fairy, whatever, had known I was high and had sex with me? I was high? And if he calls me pretty or sweetheart one more time… We’d had sex in the middle of the park with humans all around. It was all too much to take in at the moment. “How long have we been… how long?”
He shrugged, remorse seemingly gone. “A little over a day. Who knows how long after you took the stuff that I found you.”
“I didn’t take anything. I was at the bar and had a beer. That was it.” The pictures flashed through my mind again. My stomach clenched. “Oh…” I looked over at him. “Do you think I could get high if someone had it in their bloodstream?”
