She shot me a glare.

“I did not mean to talk to you like that.”

Hm. I wondered if our last encounter had an unintended effect. I’d warned her it was possible but if Jess was anything, she was stubborn. After I sent her to bed in some guest quarters, I returned to my own and fell into a peaceful sleep.

I was unceremoniously awakened by the doors to my quarters sliding open. Before I could react, Jess had climbed on top of me and pressed her knife against my throat.

“I’m sorry Kronos, but you need to help me. I’m taking you captive. If you don’t help, I’m going to kill you.”

My eyes widened, glowing yellow instantly. Tens of options rushed through my head. We’d mated. I would have rather died than hurt her. Yet here she was ready to drive a knife into my chest for her primitive currency. I could have crawled into her head and disabled her, except if I did that, I might hurt her. I couldn’t bring myself to cause her harm.

I had a directive when I’d come to earth. While that directive no longer applied, it couldn’t hurt to put it into practice — toallowJess to hold me captive and watch how it played out. Could I convince her to set me free?

“I won’t resist.”

“Tell me how to make sure you can’t leave this place.”

“You’ll have to erect a forcefield. I recommend you leave the room before doing that.”

“But you’ll run.”

“No. I won’t. I understand when I’ve been beat.”

She seemed skeptical, but raced out of the room.

“Hello? I want a forcefield around this room.”

“You are not authorized to erect a forcefield.”

Jess’s face turned red. She was still brandishing her knife and if I had to guess, she wouldn’t be afraid to use it.

“What the hell am I going to do now?”

“What’s your plan for me? When you take me captive?”

“You aren’t even trying to escape,” Jess accused, “What are you really planning?”

“I’m planning nothing, sweetling. I can’t harm you.”

“Why are you calling me that. Stop it. If you’re going to co-operate, this will be easy,” she replied smugly.

“Like I said, what is it that you want?”

“Money. Lots of it. Enough for my mom, and my sisters.”

“My people don’t use currency.”

“Yeah but you must have some kind of technology, right?”

“This ship is filled with technology, Jess.”
