She squeals and I can’t help but laugh.
“God took you long enough, Mare.”
Liz rolls her eyes.
“You will tell us everything later. Swear it right now.”
I look at my two best friends.
“Yes, I promise I will tell you everything. Now let's get going!”
I tell them and we start to walk over to the boys.
“Where to next?”
Mary asks and Liam says.
“Well, I know a great food truck spot!”
We all cheer because we are all starved. Adonis though just stands there and says nothing.Does he regret what we did?I asked myself; I saw the look in his eyes when we left the cave. He didn’t want to make eye contact with me at all. I take his hand, and he looks down at our entwined hands. He looks back up at me and smiles, but I can tell this smile is a hollow one.
I should know, I am a master at giving those. I don’t say anything to him about just walking hand in hand to the bikes.
He gives me my helmet and helps me on as usual, but he doesn’t say a word to me. I can’t help but feel self-conscious about all of this. One moment he is begging for me, the next he is keeping me at arm’s length. I don’t know why he is doing this. I want to confront him about it but knowing him he would just say he is ok and there isn’t anything wrong.
I sigh and he hears me through the mic.
“You alright Lillypad?”
He asked me, talking to me like usual and I couldn’t help but feel uneasy.
“Yup. Perfectly fine Adonis.”
He stiffens a bit when I say his name putting a bit of venom in it. I wanted him to know I am upset because he isn’t talking to me or rather, he isn’t communicating with me about what is going on in his head.
We arrived at the food truck spot, and they have different food trucks everywhere. Mary, Liz, and I all have our eyes set on a Chinese one. The boys went to a loaded potato truck, we all got our orders and sat down. Everyone was laughing and joking, having a fun time. Adonis was chiming in, but his happiness was hollow. I didn’t like it. I wasn’t as cheerful as the others and I wasn’t talking much, just eating my food. I feel a pair of eyes watching me all of a sudden and get a chill down my spine. I look up from my plate and look around. I feel a bit of panic as I do.
“Hey Lills, you, ok?”
I hear Mary ask.
“Yeah, I think, I think I'm going to go to the restroom really quick.”
I tell them and feel Adonis watch me as I walk away.
I walk to the restrooms and look at myself in the mirror, I breathe out and fix my hair a bit. Giving myself a once over and walking out. That's when I hear it, a voice I know all too well.
“Hey Darlin, I see you’re not afraid to chow down in front of people anymore.”
I turn around and see Maxwell and my heart begins to race out of fear. He begins to walk closer to me and I take a step back.
“Now don’t be like this, remember what happened last time.”
I scoff.
“How could I forget my cheek is still a bit swollen.”
I tell him as he reaches for my cheek.
