"Did you manage to tighten security around Erica? With Heidi out for blood, I need to know she's safe."
"Of course, I've taken care of it!" Dad snapped, his patience wearing thin. "I know how to do my job, Liam."
"Sorry, Dad," I muttered, regretting my tone. "We're all under a lot of pressure right now."
"Indeed, we are," he agreed, his voice softening. "Just focus on finding a solution, son. We'll handle things here."
"Alright, Dad. Talk to you soon." With that, I ended the call and stared at my phone, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on me.
It was Thursday before the next breakthrough. Damon and I were sitting at the table when the kitchen door flew open with a bang, and Audrey burst in, clutching a large, old purple leather book to her chest. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she slammed it down on the table, making both Damon and me jump.
"Guys, you won't believe what I've found!" she exclaimed, her voice barely containing her enthusiasm. I looked down at the book, its title embossed into the middle: "The Dark Prophecies: Visions from the Essence of the Fates." My curiosity piqued, but my mind was still clouded with worries about Erica and the pack back home.
"Alright," I said, trying to shift gears. "So, what is it?" Audrey leaned in close, her blue eyes alight with excitement.
"This world is full of curses, spells, and prophecies, right? Some are so ancient they were written by the original Alchemists or even gods and goddesses themselves. This particular volume," she tapped the cover reverently, "is believed to be written by the original three Fates." My confusion must have been evident on my face because Damon jumped in to explain.
"The three Fates, also known as the Maiden, Mother, and Crone, are said to weave the very fabric of life itself, Liam. All seers, mediums, and oracles are supposed to be able to trace their heritage back to these three."
"Okay," I nodded, starting to grasp what they were saying. "But why is this important now?"
"Alright, alright," Audrey muttered to herself as she flipped through the aged pages of the book. She finally stopped at a certain page and tapped her finger on it. "Here it is." Damon leaned over her shoulder, trying to get a glimpse of the text, while I stood across from them, my heart pounding in anticipation.
"Let me see," I demanded, my voice betraying a hint of urgency that I couldn't quite suppress. Audrey looked up at me with wide eyes, excitement radiating off her like an electric current.
"The Key Stone Prophecy," she whispered, her finger tracing the ornate title on the page. As I squinted at the ancient text, my confusion only deepened.
"What does this have to do with Erica?" I asked, unable to connect the dots.
"Wait, look at this!" Audrey cried out, pointing to a drawing on the same page. It depicted a crude standing creature that bore an eerie resemblance to the one Sophia had drawn. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I stared at the image, wondering what other secrets it held.
"According to this prophecy, there's a new hybrid species that will blur the divide between gender, species, and even dark and light itself," Audrey explained, her eyes never leaving the page. "When the first supernaturals were created by the Alchemists, there were wars between species, and humans were caught in the crossfire." Damon nodded along, his face set in a grim expression.
"So, the goddess Diana started creating fated mate bonds across species to bridge the gap. She said there would be a great war coming and that the supernaturals and humans needed to band together to stop the darkness from descending on the world."
"Does that mean...?" I hesitated, the enormity of the situation suddenly becoming clear to me. "Is Erica the key to all of this?"
"Maybe," Audrey said, her excitement barely contained. "But we need to figure out how she fits into this prophecy and what it means for you, Liam." I glanced down at the drawing again, my mind racing with questions and doubts. How could Erica be the key to something so monumental? And more importantly, would she ever believe that I wouldn't reject her when she found out the truth? Audrey's eyes gleamed with determination as she continued.
"There needs to be balance, Liam. This great new species, a mix of both witch and werewolf, is prophesied to be the ruling nature over witches and werewolves, like a royal pack, so to speak."
"I've heard of the Royal Pack," I replied, my brow furrowed in thought. "At one point, it was meant to be my pack as we were the largest. But then the Shadow Night pack contested it with the Conclave, and the title was scrapped."
"Ah," Audrey said, shaking her head. "But this is different. It's about a bloodline that's important. Look here." She pointed at the page again, her finger tapping on the text. I leaned in closer, focusing on the words of the prophecy. As I read aloud, I could feel the weight of each line settling into my chest.
“In the world where shadows blend with light,
A maiden of twenty-five shall rise from the night.
Descendant of Diana, Queen of Witches and Beasts,
Half witch, half wolf, her lineage in the least.
From an alpha's might and a priestess concealed,
Her ancient bloodline to the goddess revealed.
Though the paths of magic run deep in her veins,
