"Fine, how about this one?" Gen offered, holding up a deep emerald green dress that seemed to shimmer with each subtle movement.
"Much better," I said, smiling at her choice, feeling it was more fitting for the occasion. As we continued to get ready, I felt an undercurrent of nerves bubbling beneath the surface. Alpha Declan had invited several other Alphas, putting me directly in the spotlight. It was a far cry from the life I was used to, and the prospect of being watched so closely made my stomach twist uncomfortably.
"Erica, you've been awfully quiet tonight," Verity observed, her pale grey eyes studying me intently. "How has your first week at the new job been?"
"Good, actually," I replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "I'm still adjusting to everything, but it's been nice to have some semblance of routine." My thoughts drifted to Liam, who I'd been working alongside all week. Every time our eyes met or our hands brushed against each other, I felt a jolt of electricity between us. Being around him made my heart race and my mind swirl with conflicting emotions.
"Speaking of adjusting," Frankie chimed in, smirking as she applied her dark lipstick, "We've noticed you've been spending quite a bit of time with Grant lately. Anything going on there?"
"Nothing like that," I brushed off the comment, suddenly feeling defensive. "He's just been helping me settle in, that's all." Though it wasn't entirely untrue, I couldn't ignore the connection I felt with Grant, but it was a complicated situation. One I wasn't quite ready to face.
"Anyway," Gen interjected, sensing my unease and changing the subject, "Frankie got a new tattoo this week. Show her, Frankie!" As Frankie rolled up her sleeve to reveal an intricate design, I felt a small wave of gratitude towards Gen for redirecting the conversation. The atmosphere lightened as we continued to discuss our lives, both within and beyond the pack.
The night wore on, and my nerves grew with each passing moment. I knew I couldn't avoid my fate any longer, so I took a deep breath, bracing myself for the evening ahead. Surrounded by the fierce women I'd come to call friends, I tried to focus on the present, allowing their support to steady me as I prepared to step into the unknown.
Finally, we were all ready for the event. Verity looked stunning in a floor-length silver gown that seemed to shimmer with her every movement, accentuating her pale grey eyes. Frankie had chosen a daring black dress with purple accents that matched her hair and revealed her impressive tattoo collection. Gen wore a beautiful deep blue gown that complemented her warm skin tone and framed her curvy figure perfectly. As for me, I settled on an emerald green velvet dress that hugged my body just right, showing off my curves without feeling overly revealing. The fabric felt luxurious against my skin, and I couldn't help but feel a small sense of pride at how well it suited my red hair and green eyes.
"These events are amazing, and a real highlight," Gen remarked as she adjusted her earrings. "I mean, this isn't even one of our major celebrations, and the Alpha has invited Alphas from other packs!"
"Wow," I breathed, trying to quell the butterflies dancing in my stomach. "No pressure, then."
"Erica, you'll be fine," Verity assured me with a gentle smile. "Just remember, we're all here to support you."
"Besides," Frankie chimed in, grinning mischievously, "if things get too overwhelming, we can always sneak away for some liquid courage."
"Frankie!" Gen scolded, though I could see the amusement in her eyes. With one last deep breath to steady my nerves, we left the apartment and made our way across the park toward the pack house where the event was being held.
As we walked, I noticed that many other pack members were also heading in the same direction, families and children included. There was an air of excitement and happiness surrounding everyone, and I couldn't help but be swept up in the infectious atmosphere.
"Look at little Tommy," Verity said, pointing to a young boy who was practically dragging his parents along in his excitement. "He's been talking about this event all week."
"Let's not forget the gossip that will come from tonight," Frankie added with a smirk, earning a knowing chuckle from Gen. As we approached the pack house, I marvelled at the grandeur of the building, its exterior adorned with intricate carvings and glowing lanterns. My heart pounded in my chest, the anticipation and nerves threatening to consume me. But as I glanced back at my newfound friends, their faces filled with excitement and support, I knew I couldn't let my fears hold me back.
"Ready?" Verity asked, squeezing my hand reassuringly.
"Ready," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. With determination fuelling each step, we entered the pack house together, ready to face whatever the night had in store for us.
Stepping into the main hall of the pack house instantly took my breath away. The grand space was adorned with deep purple and blue drapes that cascaded down from the high ceiling, while shimmering gold accents added an air of opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung above us, casting a soft, warm glow throughout the room. The walls were lined with tall windows, their heavy velvet curtains pulled back to reveal the moonlit night outside.
"Wow," I whispered, unable to find any other words to express my awe.
"Alpha Declan always goes all out for these events," Gen explained, her eyes sparkling as she took in the lavish decorations. "It's important for the pack to come together and celebrate our unity." As we made our way through the hall, I couldn't help but notice the intricate details of the table settings – delicate crystal glasses, polished silverware, and exquisite floral arrangements adorned each place setting. It was clear that no expense had been spared, and I couldn't help but feel a mix of gratitude and trepidation at being the centre of such an extravagant event.
"Erica!" Gregg called out, approaching us with a wide smile. His wife and fated mate, Astra, stood by his side, her black hair cascading down her shoulders like a waterfall of moonlight.
"You look absolutely stunning tonight."
"Thank you," I replied, feeling a blush rise to my cheeks. "You both look incredible as well."
"Where's Damon?" Gregg asked, scanning the room for him.
"I'd bet he's off in some broom closet with a girl, as per usual." Astra rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. That boy never seems to tire of chasing skirts." I couldn't help but laugh at their banter, though my nerves were still threatening to get the better of me.
As our conversation continued, my eyes darted around the room, searching for Liam. I hoped to avoid him, knowing full well that his presence would only add to my anxiety.
"Relax, Erica," Gen whispered, noticing my tense demeanour. "We're all here for you, and we'll be by your side every step of the way tonight." Her words brought me a small measure of comfort, but as the time for the ceremony drew nearer, I couldn't help but feel the weight of what was to come bearing down on me. With each passing moment, the hall filled with more pack members, their excited chatter and laughter only serving to amplify my fears. Yet, amidst the sea of faces, I knew I could count on my newfound friends to help me navigate the treacherous waters that awaited.
The noise over the speakers jolted me from my thoughts, and Gregg leaned in to say,
