“How. Long?”

The beat of silence that passed between them stretched, until finally he sighed. “A few months. Maybe a year.”

Her fiancé and his admin assistant had been hooking up behind her back for a freakingyear? “Was it just her?”

There was a small flicker of emotion that crossed his face, and she knew—it wasn’t just her.

God, she wanted to slap him a second time.

“She was a mistake. I don’t love her like I love you,” he said quietly, inching toward her again.

Sadie pressed a hand to his chest. “Don’t. I am barely holding on to my anger right now. I don’t even know why you came here. It’s over.”

“Don’t say that. You love me.”

“Actually, that’s the thing…I don’t think I did. I don’t think either of us ever truly loved the other.”

“Sadie—”

“When I saw you with her on the morning of our wedding, my heart didn’t break. I didn’t crumble. I felt hurt and angry because I thought you were loyal and that we at least respected each other. But I also felt relieved.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do. When I found you, I was on my way to tell you that I couldn’t marry you, Scott. That I didn’t love you the way I was supposed to love you.”

Another wave of anger washed over his face. Maybe because he was a proud man who was used to getting what he wanted. “You’re just trying to hurt me for hurtingyou.”

God, he was delusional. And in this moment, she couldn’t do anything but wonder how she’d ever thought she could spend the rest of her life with him. Was it because he was the easy option? Because she was afraid of being alone?

“You need to go.”

“No.” He gripped her arm, and she was a second from following through on that threat to nail him in the balls when a car screeched to a stop in front of hers. And a very large, very angry looking Eastern stepped out.

CHAPTER 9

Rage ripped through Eastern so fast that his breath heated. An asshole had Sadie pressed against the back of her car. Had his fingers wrapped around her upper arm.

“Everything okay here?” he asked through clenched teeth. What he really wanted to do was shove the asshole aside.

“No,” Sadie answered.

At the same time the guy said, “Yes.”

Eastern glared at him. “Release your hold on her.Now.”

“Look, I’m just trying to have a private conversation with my fiancée—”

“Ex-fiancée,” Sadie cut in.

“I don’t care if you’re her damn husband,” Eastern ground out, moving another step forward so that he was so close he could feel the heat radiating off the guy. “Release. Her.”

Another second passed—a second too long.

Eastern grabbed his wrist and squeezed, instantly forcing him to release Sadie, then twisted his arm until it was bent behind him. The guy cried out in pain, and Eastern shoved him against the trunk of Sadie’s car.

“Eastern!” Sadie cried.

“Were you following her tonight?” Eastern growled. When the guy didn’t answer, Eastern pulled his arm higher. “Answer me.”
