“He definitely doesn’t love me.”
Harper simply raised a brow.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?” Harper asked innocently.
“Don’t make me want something I may never have.”
“Don’t you already want it?”
Dammit, she was right. And that was all the more reason to be scared.
The door to the bar opened and even though the room was packed, Tilly easily spotted him through the crowd. Kayden’s shirt was steel gray, and it was so tight it hugged the thickness of his arms and wide chest. And his eyes, those intense blues, were her downfall. They could break many hearts…starting with hers.
“Why does he have to be so beautiful?” Tilly asked, more to herself than to anyone else.
“To torture you.”
Oh, he definitely did that. When his eyes met hers, they beamed right into her, stealing her breath and her very ability to think.
“Remember,” Harper whispered, leaning forward. “Talk to him. You’ll feel better after.”
Unless she didn’t.
Her friend squeezed her hand before moving away.
Tilly wasn’t even sure if she responded to Harper. All she could do was watch as Kayden moved toward her, so big and fierce it was like nothing and no one could get in his way.
The second he was by her side, he touched the small of her back before leaning his head down and whispering in her ear, “You look too sexy, Tilly. I don’t know if I like all these guys staring at you.”
A shiver rolled down her spine, but that was less about his words and more about the brush of his breath on her ear. She wore high-waisted jeans and a strapless top that showed off a couple inches of her bare waist.
“I think I should be the one worried about women looking atyou,” she finally whispered.
“Doesn’t matter if they look. I’ve only got eyes for one woman.” His lips grazed her cheek. “I missed you today.”
She laughed. “We woke up together, then both worked at the visitors center all day.”
“And I barely saw you.” Finally, he straightened, and she had to crane her neck back to look at him.
She lifted a shoulder. “We were busy.”
“Dance with me.”
She turned her head to look at the empty dance floor. “We’d be the only ones out there.”
“I don’t care. I want to hold you.”
Lava pooled in her belly, making her want to both run and lean into him at the same time. “I want you to hold me too.”
Gently, he took her hand and pulled her to the dance floor. She wasn’t sure what she expected, but it certainly wasn’t for Kayden to wrap his arms tightly around her waist and tug her into his chest.
There was no space between them, not a single whisper of it. She could feel every hard ridge of his body. Every breath he took.
His mouth lowered and he nuzzled her neck. “Mmm, you smell good.” Coming from the guy who was like a walking forest, fresh pine and all man. “Why didn’t you wait for me?” he asked, lifting his head. “We could have come together.”
“I wanted to talk to Harper for a bit first.”
