“Nigga don’t you think this family has enough kids? We out here popping ’em out like we going out of style,” I remarked, looking from G to Rennix over the massive fucking tree.
G shrugged. “So.”
“Yeah, it’s so until you need a babysitter for twelve kids and you can’t go get indecent exposure on the beach in some hot sand ass country.” I pulled my phone from my pocket, about to look for Jason’s contact. I had talked to him a few days ago because they had just finished the kitchen. I had been meaning to go by, but not only had it been cold as fuck, I was held up in the crib on constant with Rem and Ro. Crazy because I had never been the type to sit still, but lately that was all I had been doing. Shit, I’d even put some time into my T-shirt business while also manning Poles & Pastries from afar with the GMs.
“Yo, shut your ass up and call the fucking contractor and see what he can do.” G waved me off.
Once I had his contact, I clicked it and put the phone to my ear while it rang. About fifteen seconds in, he answered.
“Morning Reminisce, what can I do for you?” he asked. I could hear the power tools in the background, which meant he was on a job, if not at my spot. Jason had a team of over forty motherfuckers and he worked all their asses to the bone, splitting them up for different jobs and tasks. I knew that because he worked on my other buildings as well.
I explained the situation to him, earning a good laugh in return before he told me I needed a tree removal service with a dump truck to get it. It wasn’t a total loss of a call. Not only did he give me a number, he also requested that I come through to the house at some point so we could finalize some things. Once I hung up with him, I called the tree removal company and they put me on hold quick as fuck.
“Yo, pop your locks, it’s cold as fuck out here,” G said to me, turning to go to my truck. Though there was still not a lick of snow on the ground, it was cold as fuck.
“Ain’t locked. Where’d sis go?” I asked, remembering Beyah had dropped him off in the driveway and pulled off.
“To get coffee and something to eat.”
“Tell her to grab me some too. This fool called me out here like I had another kid on his doorstep.”
G’s chuckle filled the crisp air at the same time I heard the car door open. “Aight.”
The tree removal company had me on hold for about three minutes until they finally came back and told me seven hundred. That was pricey as fuck for a dead tree with scarce branches, but I agreed as long as they got this shit done within the next couple hours. I gave them the address and told them we’d be waiting before they hung up. One would’ve thought it was my fucking house the way Rennix ran his ass in the crib and I was stillstanding out here. I soon joined G in my truck because there was only so much standing out here could do.
“You ’boutta tell me why you got a contractor or I gotta get nosy?”
“Nigga, you already nosy.” I chuckled as my phone vibrated in my pocket.
When I pulled it out, of course it was a message from Rim. I had been vague with her earlier, but that was because I didn’t even know what I was coming out here for.
Rim:You good?
Rim:??
Me:Damn you worried, baby?
Me:I’m straight.
Me:Fool called us out here over a fucking tree. It fell in his driveway.
Rim:LOL.
I looked up from my phone and caught G looking at me. Yep, he was about to be on that nosy shit.
“What, man?” I asked, eyes going from him to the tree in front of my car.
“You, that’s what. You been on some silent, city shit. Not only do I now know you got a contractor, but you’re smiling at your phone. Must be your girl?”
I nodded. “Usually, sitting in one place motion kills me. It’s like I couldn’t fathom not hopping on a flight, but lately I crave the stillness. Not being bothered and up under her. Shit is strange. Feels like I’m settling into something I never thought I could have.”
“Doesn’t sound strange at all to me.”
“Yeah, because you saw love. Our pops wasn’t shit, but with your grandparents, you saw love. You had healthy examples and knew what to accept.”
He nodded. “So, what? You scared you gonna hurt her?”
“Or fuck this up. Either way I don?—”
