“We talked about this. Don’t be tryna’ get on that in front of my sister. We agreed that we didn’t want Aurora to be an only girl, right?”
Kay rolled her eyes to the ceiling. “Yeah, we did.”
“Now get in motion, especially since your kids are going to their grandmother’s house after dinner.”
I laughed and she rolled her eyes.
Apparently, he was right because she conceded seconds later. “I hear you.”
I spent a little while longer with them then left. When I got in the car, I dialed my mother.
“Oh, now my daughter knows I exist. To what do I owe the pleasure?” she answered immediately.
“I’ve always known you exist, Mama. I text you every morning.”
She laughed. “You know I don’t read those messages. That girl Sarah does, whatever the hell the kids call her.”
I chuckled. “Siri, Mama.”
“Well, whatever her damn name is. So why are you calling and not coming by, mi hija?”
“Because I have to go to the grocery store.” I sped through the streets trying to get to the grocery store, then back to the city.
“For what? You don’t cook.” She laughed after saying that.
“I can cook.”
“I didn’t say you can’t. I said you don’t. You don’t like the kitchen. I mean you didn’t until a certain?—”
The smile on my face couldn’t be missed which made me glad I was in the car alone. “Mama, please.”
“Don’t mama please me, girl. Now tell me what you need.”
I grinned, pulling into the parking lot. “I need your chili recipe.”

Reminisce
I was sleeping good than a motherfucker after Jade picked up Romance this morning. Then Rennix called me talking about he needed my help and couldn’t say it over the line. That was a cause for concern because this was literally the second fucking time he’d made one of those calls in the last few months. This time though, I had half a mind to put my hands on him. Who the fuck did a nine-one-one call about a fucking tree? As a matter of fact, I didn’t know how many times I had told his stupid ass to get the trees on his property maintained, but nah, a nigga didn’t listen. Now one of them had fallen in the middle of his driveway, making it close to fucking impossible for anyone to get in or out. Rennix’s house sat behind what looked like a mini forest because, of course, he liked to be out of touch.
“You mean to tell me you called me talking about you couldn’t talk over the fucking phone and you’re talking about a fucking tree?” I mugged the fuck out of Rennix.
“Same shit I’m saying. I was in the middle of something and this you?” G asked, eyes settling on our brother.
He waved us both off. “Y’all both bitching. I don’t see nobody tryna offer a fucking solution.” He was standing on the otherside of the tree talking shit. The only way he could come to the side we were on was if he walked through the mini forest he also didn’t keep maintained on the side.
“That’s because we ain’t fucking tree people.”
“Why you ain’t call your brother-in-law? Ain’t he the outdoorsy motherfucker?” G asked.
“Nah, I didn’t. He gotta work. He told me to get the contact number for the contractor from you though. What the fuck you got a contractor for?” Rennix asked, eyeing me, waiting on an answer.
“For my motherfucking business.” I felt his and G’s eyes on me as soon as I said that.
“Well for your motherfucking business, do you mind dialing that nigga up and seeing what he can do about this? ’Cause I ain’t tryna go to Home Depot, buy hacksaws, and spend my day with you niggas. I’m busy and tryna convince my wife to give me another baby.”
