“He plays golf with his father…”

“Who is your Lord?”

“Winston Garvey.”

Hmm. Never heard of that name, so Bill is lying to her or the Lord is going by another name. I’m starting to think anything is possible. “When are you supposed to marry him?”

“A year ago.” Her lashes flutter, and I run a hand through my hair. She did tell me she would have already had at least one kid by now.

I want to ask her about breeders, but I don’t. She doesn’t know anything about it. As a Lord, you’re never told what your punishment is for failing an assignment. The Lords want you to be surprised. “What do you know about the founders?” I decide to ask.

Her brows pull together in confusion. “No one knows who they are.”

Well, fuck! This didn’t get me anywhere. Pulling out my pocketknife, I cut the rope and untie her. Picking her up, I carry her back to bed and pull the covers up over her neck. “It’ll wear off within an hour,” I say, kissing her forehead gently.

As I walk away, she speaks softly, “May I ask you a question?”

I sit down next to her, brushing her dark hair from her face, and smile. “What is it?”

“Why don’t you have a Lady?”

I tilt my head to the side but don’t answer.

“Is it because you denied her, or the Lords denied you a Lady as punishment?”

“Why do you think they’d deny me a Lady?” Such a strange word for her to use.

“I got an email about you…under Lady, it saiddenied.”

Adam and I have been through her laptop, and any emails she received from the Lords have been wiped clean with no trace of how to retrieve them. So I have no clue what they’ve sent her. I decide to ask my own question. “If you think I’ve been denied a Lady, then why did you ask me about getting married this morning?”

“Because everyone deserves someone.” She yawns, and her eyes flutter shut.

Four years ago

Adamand I enter the office at Carnage, and all conversation comes to a halt. All four of our fathers are present.

Mine looks at me. “Haidyn, just who I wanted to see.”

Must be my lucky day.

“We need to finish that conversation?—”

“We did. It’s done with.” We’ve already had our vow ceremony. I have a chosen. My father said that Sierra’s father owed him a favor, and she was it. I told him that he should fuck her then, and he just laughed. The sick bastard has definitely thought about it.

His jaw sharpens at my words. “It’s complicated…”

The door opens behind us, and Adam and I both turn to see a woman enter the office. She wears a red dress that hugs her curves and shows off her large, paid-for chest. Her head is held high, and her eyes sweep over me and Adam for a quick second before she dismisses us both.

“Brothers.” She addresses our fathers. Going to them one by one, they each hug and kiss her cheek. “I’m sorry to interrupt. I can come back,” she offers.

“Nonsense.” My father waves off her concern and pulls out the chair to his desk for her to have a seat. “Come alone today?” he asks, looking back to the door.

“He’s here. I left him in the foyer speaking to Jessie.”

The room falls silent, and I look at Adam.

“Okay…” Adam starts feeling the awkwardness in the room.
