“You can dress comfortably, like on some chill shit. I do need you to pack a bag for the weekend though.”
“Pack a bag? How do you know I don’t have any plans? What about Spencer?”
“Yes, a bag. You don’t, and Spencer is already taken care of. And I know you aren’t on call this weekend either.” I already knew she would ask.
Turquoise was out of school for whatever reason, so my dad and Sharon had plans to take her somewhere, which freed up my time. Since Maverick and I had been dating, we hadn’t left the city, so I planned something special for us. It took some sneaking to make sure she didn’t have anything to do and that Spencer would be taken care of, but I got it done.
“You just have it all figured out, huh?”
“That’s my job, baby.”
Maverick sucked her teeth before she said, “What kind of clothes should I bring?”
I thought about it for a minute. I didn’t want to give away where we were going, but I had to tell her something.
“How about something sexy. Also, something regular. If you need anything else while we are gone, I got you.”
“You’re being real sneaky, sir. I guess I’ll play along.”
Suddenly, the alarm blared, so I told Maverick I would see her later, then headed out to the call.
“Do you need me to drive?” Maverick asked as I opened the door for her.
“No, ma’am.” I kissed her lips, then helped her into the car. Once she was inside, I closed the door and walked around to the other side.
“But you worked all night and I’m sure you are tired,” she said as soon as I got in.
She wasn’t wrong about being tired. Once we got off the phone, we had multiple calls, and I didn’t get done until a few minutes before it was time to go. Luckily, all the calls we had were quick, so they weren’t strenuous, but still. I’d been up since the night before, with a few cat naps in between. I wouldn’t tell Maverick that, though, because I didn’t want her to drive.
I buckled my seat belt and looked over at Maverick while resting my hand on her thigh.
“I’m fine, baby. Thanks for volunteering though. If I let you drive, you’ll know where we are going, and I can’t have that.” I winked, then pulled away from her house.
“I don’t know why you just won’t tell me.” She rubbed the back of my head.
I noticed she did that when she was trying to get information out of me, or wanted something, even though she hardly asked me for anything.
“How was your day?” I asked, changing the subject.
Maverick sucked her teeth, and I chuckled. When she realized I wasn’t telling her where we were going. She told me about her day at work, then asked me about mine. I told herabout some of the random calls I went on the night before and earlier in the day.
We continued to talk as jazz music played over the radio.
“You’ve yawned multiple times, sir. Are we close to our destination? It’s bothering me that you won’t let me drive.”
We’d been on the road for over an hour, and the long day had caught up to me.
“I promise you I am fine, and we are almost there.”
“Why didn’t we just leave in the morning?”
I felt a little bad about the worried look on Maverick’s face when I glanced at her. I didn’t think she would be this concerned about me driving, but I should have known better. The times I worked multiple days in a row, Maverick would come to my house instead of me going to hers. Each time, she would pick Turquoise up from school or my father’s house, and they would cook dinner together. When I could, I would eat with them, but if I got off too late, Maverick would get Turquoise ready for bed.
“Because I wanted to capitalize on the time we have. I just want to eat something, shower, and lay up with you. Tomorrow, we have a whole day ahead of us. I’m not even as tired as you think I am.”
“Okay, Onyx.”
A couple of minutes later, we arrived at our destination.
