It would have been a good idea to ask that before we went for ice cream, but it wouldn’t have mattered. It was harmless, but still not the right thing to do if she was involved.
A slow smile spread across her face. Her lip gloss had worn off some after eating the ice cream.
“I would like to go on a date with you, and I am single.”
“Good. I mean, that shit wouldn’t have mattered anyway.” I shrugged. “I already know we were meant for each other,” I spoke honestly.
“How? You don’t know me.”
Turquoise shifted beside me, so I knew I had to hurry it up because baby girl could be impatient at times.
“How about I tell you over dinner?”
Maverick glanced down at Turquoise, who had gotten a little more antsy. I already knew the ice cream would give her a sugar rush.
“That’s fine.”
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and handed it to her. “Put your number in, and I’ll call you with the details.”
She took the phone from my hand, and I watched her as she put her number in it.
Maverick leaned down to Turquoise’s eye level. “Bye, cutie.” She gently pinched Turquoise’s cheek, and she blushed.
“Bye.” She waved at Maverick.
“I’ll talk to you soon, gorgeous.”
Maverick’s cheeks slightly reddened.
“I’m looking forward to it.” She turned to walk away, and I watched her for a minute.
“Daddy, let’s go.” Turquoise pulled on my arm.
We left to head home. I needed to set up a good date for Maverick and me and see if my folks could watch baby girl for me. I didn’t want to wait too long for the date, so I would see if Maverick was available within the next day or so. I prayed that the feelings about her stayed true after the first date.
A few dayslater
“Can you believe I’m getting ready to go on a date?” I asked Spencer while I rubbed his head.
The only thing he did was turn his head sideways, and I giggled. Lately, I’d been talking to him like he could understand what I said. Kayla was literally down the hall, but sometimes I just wanted to talk without being judged. Not to say that she would judge me, but I just had some things on my mind that I didn’t want anyone to know. Spencer had become a walking diary for me. I needed to call my therapist and thank her for her recommendation. I never thought having a dog could bring me peace, but he had so far.
Initially, I thought Onyx and I would go on our date the day after we had ice cream, but he had to do a forty-eight-hour shift, and he needed at least a day to rest and spend time with his daughter.
Since meeting them, I wondered where her mother was but wasn’t sure how to approach the question. I didn’t want to cross any boundaries, but I needed to know if I was getting myself into something I didn’t want to be in. Onyx was one beautiful man, but I wasn’t trying to be anyone’s side chick. I’d rather continue being single and using the toys I had accumulated over the years.
Spencer went to lie down in his bed as I continued getting ready. I had to put my hand over my stomach to quell the jitters.
Just as I slipped my earring into my ear, there was a knock on my room door.
“Come in.”
The door slowly pushed open as Kayla entered. “Ooh, don’t you look cute.” She smiled and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Cute? That’s it?” I spun around so she could get the full picture. “Cute isn’t necessarily the look I’m going for.”
Kayla rolled her eyes, then tapped her finger on her chin. “Did you want me to say sexy? Or fuckable?”
I put my other earring in, then dressed my arm in multiple silver bracelets. On my other arm was a silver watch that I had gotten from my grandmother years ago. It was one of my favorite watches.
