“Ulrich?”
“If you’d prefer not to meet him—”
“No, that’s fine. Send me his contact information and details. I’ll get in touch with him.”
“All right, Nova.” Veronica paused. “But please call me if you need to talk. I don’t just facilitate matches for you. I can be an excellent listener.”
Nova had the strong impression that Veronica’s words were sincere and she deeply appreciated them.
“I promise I will if I need to,” Nova said.
“All right. Have a good day, Nova.”
“You too, Veronica.”
As she disconnected, Nova wanted to call her back and tell her she changed her mind.
Instead, she tossed the phone on the bed next to her and pulled the blanket over her head.
ChapterTen
Nova wanted to regret going on this date, but it was too hilarious.
Ulrich was a nice guy. A decent guy.
But it was clear that he liked to be needed. Yearned for it actually.
There was no way in hell they were a good match.
Nova wondered what in the hell Veronica was thinking, matching her with this guy. Then, she realized that Veronica had probably done it on purpose, which made her want to laugh even more.
The woman was sneaky and smart. Nova had to admire her for that.
The night began pleasantly enough. Ulrich asked her to meet him at a bar just around the corner from Gallagher’s for a drink. Nova was glad for that because it meant she could walk there and enjoy a cocktail without worrying about driving home.
The date started well. Ulrich was funny, intelligent, and he didn’t seem to take himself too seriously. While she wasn’t insanely attracted to him, she was enjoying his company.
He was the type of man she could be friends with.
So, after they finished their drinks and he asked her if she’d like to go to a nearby restaurant for dinner, Nova agreed.
When he turned the corner that led back to Gallagher’s, it took everything Nova had not to fall to the ground in a fit of wild and somewhat panicked laughter.
Instead, she turned to him and said, “This is a great choice.”
“You’ve been here before?” he asked, seeming disappointed.
“Yes, but I love the food here.”
That statement was completely true.
Ulrich’s face fell into lines of pure disappointment. “I was hoping to share something new with you.”
While his words would normally be considered sweet or thoughtful from someone she was dating, this was their first date. She didn’t even know this man. It was peculiar and a little off-putting.
Nova let that roll off her back. “It’s okay, Ulrich. I’m excited that you’re going to get to try it with me.”
His face cleared a little. “That sounds nice.”
