He smiles, plants a chaste kiss on my lips, then leaves.
My thoughts range from guilt over canceling with my grandma, excitement over watching a movie with Stone, anger at myself for even suggesting that we continue on until the Halloween Bash, and revulsion over clinging to Stone Harper like he’s the broken plank Rose held onto for dear life, despite all my big talk that I won’t ever let another man use me or pull me around.
Because if I lose him for good, what’s the point of even existing anymore? I might as well go down into the icy water like Jack.
I’m twenty-six.
Unmarried.
He’s my only prospect in sight.
He’s the only prospect I want.
I love him.
Like I’ve never loved before…

THE DARK MOMENT // "HOW DID IT END?"
Apoem by Lucy May – November 3rd
"GOOD RIDDANCE"
the wind thrashing my hair
matched the wild coloring your soul
gravel beneath the tires
final destination: unknown
Unknown became a diseased reality
when the wind slapped our faces
gravel under my heels
as I rejected the complacent
you said you’d come back
but a fool’s word is a lie.
complacency is an altar
where good girls go to die.
Chapter 18
Stone
“Iswear you’ll be the death of me, Lucy May. Who gave you permission to look this ravishing at a community event?” Within the privacy of my office, I tug my literal little lion close and kiss a trail from her jaw to her collarbone, careful to avoid her carefully crafted lioness makeup.
“Marble, stop it.” She laughs and pushes me away. “You’ll ruin my face.”
I purr playfully, pulling her back to me and kissing down the other side of her neck. “Don’t tempt me.”
