Sky nodded, hugging himself tighter.
Encouraged, I continued. “Since I never claimed Chloe and she isn’t a formal member of the pack, other Alphas have the right to challenge me for the right to claim her. Darren filed a formal challenge with the Council. If I refuse to fight, he’ll be allowed to claim her and she doesn’t want that.”
Sky relaxed slightly, his arms dropping to his sides.
“I’m not staying with Chloe, Sky. She isn’t who I want to be with.”
“But when you win, you’ll have to claim her.” Sky’s voice wavered. “So, it won’t matter.”
It killed me that I couldn’t fill him in on the rest of the plan that Drey and I had hatched, but I couldn’t risk word getting out before the fight.
“You’ve got to trust me, baby. Can you do that?”
Sky’s Adam’s apple bobbed when he swallowed, but he gave a hesitant nod.
The knot in my stomach began to unravel when he walked past my outstretched hand and wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my neck. I pulled him close.
We were still embracing when a rustling from the other side of the small room caught my ear. I looked over and saw a pair of pain-glazed eyes staring blindly in our direction.
Alexi was awake.
