The soreness was a reminder I didn’t ask for, but those flashbacks? They were dragging me so bad that I couldn’t really focus on anything else.

I could still hear his voice in my ear.

“Open your mouth for me.”

“Don’t run now.”

“Keep your eyes open.”

What I did last night was supposed to be business, but why couldn’t I get it off of my mind. I needed another shot to try and help that feeling go away, but I was not taking another one without a chaser. I am a weak link, and the burn of Patron was a little too much for me.

“I’ll be back, y’all. I’m going to get us some more mixers. The waitress hasn’t been back in like thirty minutes, and I’m done waiting.” I complained about the subpar service we were receiving. Something was telling me that she knew this cabana was free and was treating us like some bums because of it.

“I think she’s hating on us.” Tania yelled back in my ear. Tania was the one friend who, if we had a fight in the club, she probably started it. To her, everyone was hating and anyone that disagreed with her was just wrong. Her being a Scorpio gave her traits that I wouldn’t put up with if I didn’t love her, and she wasn’t a good time. She did have good sides to her and was as loyal as a fucking horse, but as I said, she was a handful.

“You coming with us to get mixers?” I asked Ari, who was swaying her hips to the music while texting on her phone. It was probably Josiah stirring up some shit as usual. He acts crazy with her any time we go out, so I didn’t expect anything different this weekend. All I want for Christmas is for Ari’s future husband to grow up and for me to get one, for that matter.

“No, I’m going to stay here because I don’t need that crazy man giving away our section.”

“True!” We both agreed.

“We will be back.”

“K.”

She replied, and we left the section. We stumbled through the crowd of people who’d made it in since we’ve been here whileholding hands with one another until we were up at the bar and yelling for the bartender to hear us.

“What can I get you ladies?”

“I need a craft of cranberry juice, and one with lemonade.”

“Just a craft? No liquor?”

“No, we have a section.” I pointed towards the cabana area.” She nodded her head and then left us standing there waiting, and Tania was dancing like we were on the dancefloor before I heard her sucking her teeth damn near over the music.

“Owee, bitch. Who is that! Is he a fucking rapper or something?”

Her tone alone had me turning around, and the second I did, my whole body froze like I was surrounded by ice.

It was him. The man who had been on my mind since last night.

“His ass is fine as hell, and he knows it too. Look how he walks like his dick is big,” Tania said, fanning herself as I suddenly got hot too. He was walking into the pool area with a huge chain, glistening in the daylight. He wasn’t alone, and a big security guard walked beside him, and the two of them scanned the party like they were checking what belonged to them.

His shirt was hanging open like he didn’t even bother with the buttons, and his body was doing all the talking for him. His abs sat tight and stacked, cut up like God chiseled them with a box cutter, and that smooth brown skin underneath made the chain he was wearing take a back seat.

“Ma’am.”

The bartender tapped the counter, snapping me out of my trance.

She slid the two carafes toward me.

“Your total is $50.”

“Damn, $50 for some juice y’all poured from a carton?” Tania complained, finally taking her eyes off the man.

“It’s okay, girl. I got it. It’s no problem.”

“Okay, big money.” Tania joked as I pulled out my card. Another bartender walked up beside the one helping us, tapped her elbow, and nodded her chin toward the cabana area.
