“Do you like it?”

“I do.” She peeks at the tag. “I hope it fits.”

Me too, but I did my research. I looked at the clothes in her closet and went with the size on some of those. Not that she has many clothes here, since most of her things were damaged in the fire. “I’ll step out so you can try it on.”

She doesn’t answer. I get a little nod though.

I’ll take it.

I look down at Brynn, who’s looking up at me. “He bought me a dress.”

Not surprisingly, Brynn has no response. It won’t be long until she starts smiling, though. I can’t wait for that. And the giggles. Baby laughter is the absolute best sound in the world.

Holding up the dark blue dress again, I smile. “It’s cute.” Simple but classic. “He has good taste, baby girl.”

Taking off my Bloom’s tee first, I push down my leggings next.

“A date, Brynn. He wants to take me on a date.”

Not going to lie, it’s surprising. Especially since he’s been acting so weird since we did the deed last Sunday. When I asked him to come back to bed, he did, but it was awkward. He lay there stiffly while I nursed Brynn. After that, he took her back to bed and didn’t return. So, I’d gotten up, taken a towel from his bathroom, and tiptoed back to my room to dress. After that, I wasn’t sure what to do, but the smell of breakfast cooking drew me out. When I got to the kitchen, I found my clothes from earlier neatly folded and sitting on one of the stools. His back was to me, so I’m not sure he even heard me approach. Taking my clothes, I returned to my room, shut the door, and fell asleep.

Can you blame me? I’d had a busy morning.

I woke up when Brynn did, but he was nowhere to be found. Either he was napping too or he was in his office. I didn’t think he would have left without telling me. Anyway, I decided I needed to get out for a while, so I sent Robin an SOS.

Of course she told us to “come right over.”

As soon as I was dressed, I got Brynn packed up too. When we stepped out into the living area, he was there. I’m pretty sure he was surprised, or maybe even disappointed, that we were leaving, since we’d made plans to go to the park, but this thing between us, the sex, threw a wrench in our comfortable, easygoing life. And I needed to talk it out with Robin. She’s always been my sounding board.

And now, here we are. Going on a date.

Stepping into the dress, I pull it up over my hips. “Thank goodness.” Pulling it up the rest of the way, I slide my arms into one cap sleeve, then the other. Reaching back, I’m able to get the zipper up most of the way. I’m going to need help with the rest, though. “I wish you could help me with my zipper, sweetie.” Brynn’s eyes are fluttering closed like she’s fighting sleep. Something that’s been happening more and more. My girl likes to be up where all the action is taking place.

“Be right back.”

Nate’s not in the living room, so I step up to his bedroom door and knock.

“You don’t need to knock, babe. Come in.”

The mini eye-roll came out of nowhere. Pushing open the door, I smile when I see him. Before, he was wearing jeans and polo-style shirt with his company logo on the right chest. Now, though, he’s got on dark dress pants and a gray dress shirt. He’s busy tying a navy patterned tie around his neck, and I swear to you, I think I like this look better than the shirtless one in the athletic shorts.

No.

I take that back.

They’re both good.

“Um, can you zip me up?”

“Sure. Come over here.” I go to him. He’s standing near his dresser. When I get to him, I turn and hear the telltale sound of the zipper moving up. Thank goodness, the dress fits. Especially over my chest, which has grown in massive proportions since Brynn.

“Thank you.” I turn and watch as his gaze starts at my neck and slowly moves down.

When his eyes finally make it back up to my face, he says, “You look stunning.”
