John rolled his eyes. “I retract my question.”
Jesse smiled and extended his hand. John grabbed it, and they shared a classic bro hug.
These two were just too cute for words.
I was startled when Jesse turned to me abruptly, “What’s your favorite color?”
“Umm pink?” Was he serious? I grinned.
“Are you asking me or telling me?” The smartass smirked.
“Telling you.” I poked him in the chest. The arrogance in these two was strong.
“So did you expect to be Nexus?” Jesse asked, with a twinkle in his eye.
I held both hands over my mouth to keep from laughing.
“Are you serious right now?” John scowled, not amused in the least.
“I said we needed to ease into the question, and that’s what I did.” The goofball smirked.
I couldn’t contain my laughter any longer. These two were going to be trouble…double trouble.
Chapter 2
Jesse
Her laughter was the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard. I could see by the look on my brother’s face that he felt the same.
Adelaide was petite, with long, beautiful, pale hair that reached her waist, and captivating amber eyes. Her figure was stunning. I tried to keep my gaze respectful, but it was a challenge.
What were the chances that we’d find our Nexus the very first year we were at Emberhold?
Neither of us expected to get lucky enough to be in the same Faction.
Truthfully, I’d thought we might both be Nexus. We were unusually strong for Passives. John and I had an affinity for animals that was unlike any I’d ever seen. (He for drawing them to him and me for imitating them.) I suspected that when we became Faction our ability would be related to that.
“Well, here’s your class,” John stated unnecessarily, since we had stopped in front of a door that had Biology written in a plaque to the side.
I knew he was as hesitant to leave her side as I was. Maybe a trip to the office was necessary. We were all first-year students, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to adjust our schedules to fit hers.
“I see that.” She laughed, pointing at the large plaque.
I had to adjust myself. I loved a good smartass, and she obviously fit the bill.
John grinned mischievously, always quick with a comeback, "I wanted to be absolutely sure you knew. I didn’t want you to get lost before opening the door.”
Haha, my sense of direction isn’t that bad," Adelaide glared, but I could see the smile she was trying to hide.
I thought I’d better jump in before the moron I shared a womb with really pissed her off. “Would you like to meet us for lunch?”
“I don’t know… I might have other plans," Adelaide smiled mischievously.
“Cancel them. My brother wasn’t really asking.” John scowled.
I felt my blood heat at the thought of her meeting with other men who weren’t her potentials. I wanted… no… Ineededa commitment from her as soon as possible. If we could perform the ritual today, I’d do it, and I knew my brother felt the same.
“Be there or we’ll come looking for you.” I narrowed my eyes, prepared to argue with her.
