“What are you looking for?” I finished drying the last dish and put it away.
“Something to eat. What else would I be looking for?” Zane took out some ham and cheese and began making a sandwich.
“Are you fucking serious?” Oren asked in disbelief.
“As a heart attack. I’m a growing boy.” He winked, “Does anyone else want one?”
“I’ll take one.” Nathan shrugged.
These fools were ridiculous. I’m glad I’d seen them in action, or I’d try to talk Reverie into trading the two of them in for better candidates.
“I know that look. I’d kill you in your sleep before I’d let you talk Reverie into replacing me.” Nathan was watching me with narrowed eyes.
He was strangely perceptive.
“As if you could.” He smirked. “I’m sure you saw the jersey she was wearing and the giant STRAUSS across her back.”
“Idid. It made me think how much better she’d look in my hockey jersey withMooncovering her back.” Zane said before taking a giant bite of his sandwich.
“The hell you say, ginger boy?” Nathan growled.
I turned to Oren, tuning out the two morons. “I’m going to call a good friend of mine and see if he wants to meet with us.”
“Is he with the same covert agency you're with?” Oren asked, watching in disbelief as Nathan piled an insane amount of ham on his sandwich.
“No, but he was a Marine Raider in my old unit, and I know he’d be willing to help.” I smiled, just thinking of Deshawn’s face when I explained all of this to him.
“Okay, let me know how it goes. If he’s willing to meet, arrange it as soon as possible.” Oren looked thoughtful.
I nodded as I left the room. Oren was brilliant, and I was glad he was on our side.
Chapter 29
Reverie
Mom caught me before I could enter the kitchen and dragged me out to the patio. We sat on lounge chairs by the pool, and she grabbed both of my hands in hers.
“Tell me how things are going.” She grinned, “Those men of yours are unbelievably sexy.” Mom waggled her brows.
“Mom!” I tried to sound shocked.
“What? I’m bonded, not dead.” She grinned.
I giggled, “Well, each one is as different as night and day, even the twins. Oren is so knowledgeable and commanding and, if I’m being honest, a bit of an asshole. But he’s my asshole, so that makes it all good.” I smirked.
“I know what you mean. You’ll eventually learn that every man has a bit of asshole in them, but that’s what keeps you from getting bored.” She laughed. “How are you and Jet doing now that he’s decided to admit he has feelings for you?”
“I want to take things slow until I’m sure he’s all in. I feel bad that I haven’t marked him like I have the rest of them, but I guess it’s going to take time for my Nexus to trust him completely.” I turned and stretched out in my chair.
“Trust takes time. Rue was the hardest one for me. He was so clinical and scientific. I came to the realization I would haveto make the first move.” She smiled slowly, “He was shocked at first, but it didn’t take long for me to figure out that inside he was averydifferent man than he was on the outside.
“No matter how old I get, it’ll never be old enough to want the details when you make statements like that.” I grimaced.
Mom died out laughing, “I can understand that.”
“I was terrified when that man showed up out of nowhere and grabbed me.” I looked down at my lap, “For a moment, I forgot all of my training and just froze.”
“Look at me, Reverie.” Mom said in her no-nonsense voice.
