Lex felt his face flush again. "A few items were taken out of a locked drawer."
"Can you describe these items?"
I'd rather not.
"They were of an adult nature."
The woman raised her eyebrow. "An adult nature?"
"My adult toy drawer was cleaned out. Everything is gone." Lex shot the male officer a scathing glare when he snickered. "Whether it was adult toys or gold bars, items were still stolen from my place of residence. I expect you to treat this as a crime and not a joke."
The officer's eyes narrowed, but he didn't say anything more. Lex took them through the apartment to his bedroom, pointing out what was moved. It wasn't until he reached the dining room that he realized something else was gone.
"Flowers," he said. "I received flowers earlier today. A big bouquet of red roses. I put them in the middle of the table."
The woman smiled. "Flowers are nice. Boyfriend? Girlfriend?"
"I don't actually know who sent them."
Her eyebrows lifted. "You don't know? Was there a note?"
"There was, but when I questioned my boyfriend about it, he told me he didn't send them."
"What did the note say?" she asked.
"To the most beautiful man I've ever seen. I can't wait for you to be mine."
"And you don't know who sent them?"
Lex shook his head.
"That's too bad. That was a great note."
It was. It just wasn't from the person he wanted it to come from.
"We'll take a report, Mr. Mathis," the female officer said as she flipped her pad closed and stuck it back in her pocket. She held out a business card. "That's about all we can do at the moment. If you think of anything else or if anything else happens, give us a call."
"Wait." Lex couldn't believe they were leaving. "You don't need to call in a forensic team or something? Dust for fingerprints?"
The officer gave him a sympathetic smile. "Until we have more to go on, all we can do is take a report."
Well, damn.
Chapter Four
Tony's fear for Lex was like a lead weight in his gut. He drove as fast as he could from the airport, pushing the legal speed limit as high as he could without getting pulled over by the cops. His need to get to Lex was overwhelming.
And confusing. They'd slept together once and had numerous phone conversations. They'd talked about getting back together, even if it hadn't happened yet. They weren't exactly in a deep, committed relationship.
Not yet, anyway.
By the time he pulled up in front of Lex's building, Tony was ready to run right over the top of the next motorist who drove in front of him. It was as if every damn one of them needed to go ten miles under the speed limit.
He turned off his rental car and jumped out, making sure to lock the door before he headed inside. He wanted his deposit back on the damn thing, and there were way too many morons in the city.
Tony hurried inside the building. He forwent the elevator, going up the stairs instead. Lex lived on the third floor. It wasn't that far up. Besides, he had a lot of nervous energy built up. He could use the exercise.
By the time he reached Lex's door, he was breathing a little heavy, but he was pretty sure that was due to the fact that he was about to see the one man he hadn't been able to stop thinking about.
