"I'm okay,liefling. I just needed a little rest."
"You've been unconscious for hours, Abe." And I had felt every second of it like a crushing weight on my chest.
"How long have I been out?"
"You got hurt last night. You've been in ICU for the last day or so."
"ICU!"
"You had a skull fracture and a severe concussion. They wanted you somewhere they could keep an eye on you in case there were any problems."
"Fuck! The last thing I remember was fighting that guy in your living room."
"He hit you with a fireplace poker. Kaito called earlier. He found blood on the fireplace poker."
"Did they get arrested?"
I shook my head. "They got away for now. The guys are back at the house collecting evidence. Which reminds me, if anyone asks, you were on a non-sanctioned training mission with your unit, including Hank, when you fell and hit your head."
"I was?"
"Hank doesn't want the authorities involved at this point." Neither did I. "We think someone in the police department is working for Atkins."
"Oh, really?"
"Look." I patted Abe's arm. "I'll explain all of this to you once you get home. Right now, I need to go let the nurse know you woke up so we can get you released."
"Wait." Abe grabbed my wrist when I started to turn away and pulled me back toward him. "I want a kiss before you go."
I could happily agree to that.
I leaned in and pressed my mouth to Abe's. I opened up when his tongue slid across my lips. I trembled as Abe's hands clutched at me, pulling me closer. His hand slid into my hair, fisting a small clump. His other hand slid down to my ass, squeezing one cheek.
I was in heaven.
"Mr. Jenkins!"
I jumped and jerked back. It didn't help the flush filling my cheeks when Abe chuckled.
The nurse standing in the door just shook her head before walking over to the other side of Abe's bed. She started taking his vitals. "How are you feeling, Mr. Sesay?'
Abe grinned as he shot me a heated look. "I feel pretty damn good."
The nurse snickered. "Maybe we won't tell the doctor why, hmm?"
"When can Abe go home?" I asked.
I wanted him home.
"The doctor will need to run a few tests, and then I imagine he'll be moved to a private room on another floor. If all of his tests come back okay, he should be able to leave in the next couple of days."
Days?
I whimpered.
Abe grabbed my hand. "It'll be okay, liefling."
I wasn't so sure of that. If things were going to be okay, Abe wouldn't be lying in a hospital bed, some asshat wouldn't have it out for me, and my house would be in one piece.
