Chapter Thirteen

“What are you doing here?” Gabriel asked. “And how did you find me?”

“Is there somewhere we can talk?” Travis’s eyes shot to Chay before coming back to Gabriel. “Alone?”

“Anything you have to say to me, you can say in front of Chay. He’s my fiancé.”

“You’re fiancé?” Travis asked. “I didn’t even know you were dating someone.”

Gabriel shrugged. “It’s a recent thing.”

“Nice save,” Chay told him through their bond.

“Well, you sort of are my fiancé,” Gabriel countered. They were mated after all.

“If you want to get it right, I’d be your husband.”

Gabriel snorted. “Not until I get a ring on my finger.”

“I’ll take care of it today.”

“You do that.” Inwardly, Gabriel was jumping for joy. He had been raised human. A ring sang of commitment. “So, Travis,” he said out loud. “Why are you here?”

Travis cast a furtive glance around. “Can I come inside?”

Gabriel stepped back, pushing into Chay. When Travis walked inside, Gabriel started for the living room. “We can talk in here.”

He sat down on the couch, glancing up Chay until he took the seat beside him. “So.” Gabriel returned his attention to Travis. “Why are you here?”

“Look.” Travis’s hand shook as he pushed it through his hair. “This is going to sound insane, but I overheard Mr. Peterson talking with some guys I didn’t recognize. They were talking about you.”

“Me?”

Mr. Peterson?

“What were they talking about?” Chay asked.

Gabriel wondered that, as well. He tried to stay out of Mr. Peterson’s radar as much as possible. He simply did his job and then he went home after his shift each day, having put in his best effort at work. He didn’t make waves, which was why he had virtually no association with his supervisor other than what was necessary for his job assignments.

“They were upset over some work you had done lately.”

Gabriel felt Chay shoot him a look. He didn’t even have to look to know his mate was frowning at him. “What work?” he asked. “Did they say?”

“Some search you had done on a Dominic Pantarius. I’m assuming that’s a relative of yours?”

“My brother.”

Travis frowned. “That wouldn’t make sense then.”

“What wouldn’t?”

“Mr. Peterson told these guys that it was imperative that you not go to meet this Dominic Pantarius. He made it sound like your life would be in danger if you did, but why would your brother want to hurt you?”

“Are you sure Mr. Peterson mentioned Dom by name?” Chay asked.

Travis nodded.

“Did he mention how he knew what Gabriel was working on?”
