“He was attacked twice,” I added in. “Someone tried to kill him at the art gallery today.”
Carlos stilled.
“He’s okay,” I said quickly. “He’s at the penthouse with Lany.”
The tension in Carlos’s shoulders eased, which told me the man knew more about the place Lany and I lived in than I was comfortable with. It wasn’t so much that he knew of the safety features that bothered me, but rather how he knew.
Maybe Eddie had told him.
A racket by the door caught my attention. I turned just in time to see a very large man come in with his hands wrapped around the arm of Lyn and Lany. “Look who I found sitting in a car around the corner,” the guard said.
“Lany!”
Lany’s head snapped up. His face was pale with fear. “Sal!”
I opened my arms. Lany pulled away from the guy holding him and raced across the floor to me. I wrapped him up in my arms and tried to pull him into me. Just holding him was a relief.
Until I remembered Lany was now in the line of fire.
“Porca troia, Lany. What are you doing here?”
And what was he doing dressed in SWAT gear?
“We came to rescue you.”
“We?” I glanced around, my gaze settling on Lyn. “You and Lyn?”
Geez, was Eddie hiding somewhere?
“Um…” Lany bit his lip.
“Merda,” I groaned.
This situation was quickly going from bad to worse.
“Give me your comm unit.”
Lany took off the communication unit without comment and handed it over. I kept my eyes on Lany as I hooked it up and tapped the speak button. “This is Delvecchio. Report.”
“Fuck, Lieutenant,” Clarke said through the device. “We thought you were a goner.”
“The situation is still very fluid,” I replied. “What’s your location?”
“We’re in warehouse three searching for you.”
“And who is ‘we’?”
I had to be sure.
“Me, Brodsky, and Wu.”
“We’re in the second warehouse in from the dock. Come to my location.” I glanced up when Carlos cleared his throat. I sighed. “Don’t shoot any of the guys standing outside. They belong to Carlos Gambino.”
“Holy shit!” Brodsky snapped. “Gambino is here?”
“Everyone is here.”
I waited.
