Her phone rang. She grabbed it, expecting it to be Xander or Logan.

“Hello?”“Harper Blake?”“Yes,” a shiver of panic crawled over her. “Ivan Nowak calling fromCanada’s Best Dancer. We are calling you back for another audition, tomorrow morning at ten.”The breath went out of her lungs. In everything that had been going on, she had forgotten about it. How could she have forgotten about the show? She cleared her throat.

“Yes, that’s fine, I’ll be there.”

“Great! See you tomorrow.” Her mouth went dry.I can’t believe I told him I’d be there.

“Would you ask Nick out?” Kaylseigh said.Gardenia shook her head, her cheeks were red. “No way.”

Dazed, she took the plates away, stacking them.

“Hey, I was still eating!” Kayleigh complained.

“Sorry,” Harper mumbled. She dropped the dishes in the sink, turned on the taps and started scrubbing.

“I can do those,” Gardenia said.

Harper barely heard her and kept running the water over the plate, running the sponge over it back and forth.

“Harper, you’re freaking me out. Say something, please.”

Harper dried her hands and turned to face her friends. Gardenia, her big brown eyes luminous behind her glasses, her long sandy hair magazine perfect and Kayleigh, with her purple hair, candy skull leggings, concern on both their faces.

She couldn’t share her past with them, but there was no reason she couldn’t let them in on what was going on with her. Well, not the sleeping with Xander part. Or the wanting to sleep with Xander part, but the rest of it, she could share.

“Okay, but you have to promise me not to mention a word about this to anyone at Axis Management, no matter what.”

“Are you going to work somewhere else?” Kayleigh asked.

“No,” Harper said.

“I promise,” Gardenia said. “Spill.”

“Kayleigh?”

“Promise,” Kayleigh crossed her fingers.

“A couple of weeks ago, I went to the open audition forCanada’s Best Dancerand that was them, calling me back for another audition.”

“That’s amazing!” Gardenia hugged her.

“Oh, my God! No way,” Kayleigh screeched. “Wow. How can you even keep that a secret? They’ll see it on TV eventually.”

“Yes, eventually, but I want to keep it quiet for now,” Harper said. “This is something I did just for me, to see if I could.”

“I didn’t even know you danced,” Kayleigh said.

“Yeah, I did, when I was a kid,” Harper’s heart twisted at the words.

“I tried to take dance once but then a wardrobe fell on me, and I couldn’t follow the routines or stay in line and it was awful,” Kayleigh said.

Harper shook her head and patted Kayleigh’s arm.

“One of my sisters took contemporary dance for the longest time,” Gardenia said.

“What time is your audition tomorrow?”

“I have to be at the theatre at ten am. I have nothing here to wear for that,” Harper said.
