Hell. I think I know what must have happened. You see, my brother had been visiting from France and I’d let everything pile up, not touched the computer. He left June 15 and I discovered a letter in the stack of post to which I’d yet to attend from my ex-husband. We haven’t spoken in years, but he’s dying. The letter was very troubling. I opened a bottle of rum (this is something I rarely do). I got on the computer and I was tooling around. I must have clicked the box. What can be done? No interest in this DNA MATCH. CAN YOU DELETE IT? PLEASE HELP. SYBIL

Dear Ms. Van Antwerp,

I’m afraid we cannot delete the match because, well, I guess it’s difficult to know exactly how to say this, but if you have a person with a DNA match, that match exists outside of our system. I hope this is coming across correctly. The person with whom you share DNA is, in fact, alive in the world. Furthermore, at the time you were sent notification of the match, this member would have also received a similar communication. I can ask my manager about the possibility of blocking contact between this individual and yourself. Would you like me to do that?

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with additional questions! Thank you for contacting Kindredproject.org.

Would blocking communications be reversible?

Dear Caroline,

I am pleased to hear your paper turned out a good score. It was well written, if a little exaggerated. There were a few dates you mixed up, but that’s no matter to anyone but myself, and the undergraduate college I attended was Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania, but otherwise I did think it well done. Concise, efficient with language, good spelling, intriguing structure. I will say, I noticed that you rather painted me in a heroic light. It’s kind of you, but I was no hero, Caroline. I made errors, decisions that bore lasting effects on the lives of strangers. It doesn’t matter that it’s not in your paper, it doesn’t matter at all, but it matters to me that you know that.

I hope you are having an enjoyable summer. I believe you mentioned lifeguarding as a summer position. You must be QUITE a swimmer to put yourself in charge of the lives of children. At which of the community pools do you sit on the stand? Will you take any trips? It escapes me if you have siblings.
