“The one and only. You’ve heard of her?”Cally asked.

“Didn’t she turn one of her teammates into a toad when they were working on the blood drug case?”

“Only briefly. She’s gotten much better since then.”

“That would be a hard possibility to deal with.”He admitted.

“Those pro-human groups fear her. She’s a perfect weapon against them.”

“Let’s wait and see how much of a danger these people are first.”

“Fair enough. It’s not like she’s not busy all the time anyway.”Cally offered.

He had to admit that he hoped they didn't have to bring the toad Princess into this. While he wasn't one of the worst, wolves in general hated to be around anyone who did what they considered fluid magic.Shifters had their own kind of magic, but witches, mages, and sorcerers had a different kind of magic, and wolves were leery of it.If he could avoid calling in a witch, that was what he would do.On the other hand, if they truly needed her, he would talk to Tyne and see if she could be brought in.

She couldn't be that bad because it was clear that his mate thought the world of her.Her whole clan did because he had heard that she was an adopted white wolf.Carlos could admit that he'd not heard a lot about her because she had not been in his area as far as he knew.Never having the opportunity to meet her, he couldn't really say what she was like or what she could do.He had to admit that he had a bad feeling that they would be calling her in soon.

It was time to move on to their next location, but all the problems had made them late.Admittedly, he was glad they had attacked him and his partner instead of anyone else because he thought that they were the best able to defend themselves. If these were the people Cally thought they were, one would think they would learn that some of their women could take better care of themselves than some of their men.Cally was an impressive fighter and could take out several of those guys, even without a stun gun.He had to admit that none of these guys had any bravery in them when someone put up a fight.

“They often hire inferior fighters.A few of them only took the jobs because they liked to hurt people. That makes them dangerous to customers and to anyone that they catch.”She explained.

“Can you read my mind?”

“Not your mind, but the look on your face. It's clear that you're worrying about this and you're not sure what you should do.”

She was right, and maybe that was a good thing in a mate when she knew what he was thinking about and what was needed.Carlos had been with many women, and this was the first time they had ever considered one a partner. Most of the others would not have wanted to do the work or take the responsibility that a leader had.His mate was all he could hope for in a partner.Thank the goddess he’d found her now.He felt that what was coming would not be easy and that she would make things easier for him. This business was a big step for him and for his pack, and they needed it to succeed.

They arrived at their next location, and everything seemed to be alright. The work went well, and they were on their way quickly. As the day progressed, it became clear they would not be attacked again today. The bad guys had lost six of their men, and he suspected they needed to regroup. They finished up with the last location, leaving only one location for tomorrow. When he turned the list in to the secretary, she gave him a dirty look. The woman didn't know about anything that had happened today, and he wasn't going to tell her.Regardless of what she thought, he was still the boss.

It was time to go home and try to relax. That wasn't going to be easy with all that was going on and all the trouble he was getting.Since they were newly mated, this was the time to learn about each other and work on their relationship, but that wasn't going to be easy with all these problems.

“What do you think will happen with the guys that we captured?”He asked.

“I think Tyne will take them to Ariel for questioning. She will try to decide on the best course of action. It can be difficult because sometimes they are so bad there is nothing to save, but sometimes they are headed down a bad path, and it seems that a little help can redeem them.”

“Is it possible to make a decision like that and know that you are right?”

“Usually.Ariel is right almost all the time when it comes to that.No one is perfect, and I would rather she err in being too easy on someone than being too hard on them.”Cally admitted.

“Because of the reputation of the council prison?”

“A reputation that is deserved. The place is abusive, and many people die before their time is up.”

“I'd heard that was the case.I've never been to the prison.”He said.

“I've not been either, but I've read some really bad reports.”

“Are you sure the reports were accurate?”

“I have no doubt because the reports were made by wardens and an honest Councilman,” Cally explained.

“I'd heard that things were improving.”

“Things are improving, but so far only for those who are not in there for violent crimes. Many of them get a work release program.”

“I don't really know what to say.Wolves believe in harsh punishment in most cases.”Carlos admitted.

“Maybe so, but there must be limits in how harsh you can be.Sometimes a death sentence is more lenient than the council's prison.”
