“That’s true most of the time,” Hector admitted.“I’d best get you back to your mate.”

His car was waiting for them, and he helped her into the passenger seat.Whatever they’d shot her with was strong, and she ended up going back to sleep.

“Wake up, sleeping beauty.”Hector lightly shook her shoulder.

She woke and saw they were at Carlos’s house.“Thank you, I’d best track my mate down.”

Cally was dismissing him.She didn’t believe his story and was suspicious of him.He took the hint and left. When she got to the door, she was let in.

“Where is Carlos?”

“I thought you’d been kidnapped?”The guard commented.

“That’s true, and Hector freed me and brought me home. All the mercenaries were killed in the fight.”

This guy was sharp.“You don’t believe him.”He took a deep breath.“Congratulations.”He grinned.

“If a boss was disappointed in his hired help, killing them all would prevent the need to pay them.He was disappointed that they had bothered to capture a mated target. There was no point in killing them all. That guy is cold.”

“You think he hired them, then killed them all because he was mad that you mated?”

“What was your name?”Cally asked.

“I am Diego.I’m one of the alpha’s guards.”

“There is something about that guy that gives me goosebumps in a bad way.Do you know who he is?”

“He’s a councilman, but he always seems to be around here.”Diego offered.

“Many on the council miss all but the most important votes.”

“Especially the corrupt ones.”

“That’s probably true.Honest council members want to do a good job.”Cally agreed.

“Carlos is almost here, and he’s pissed.”

“I would be angry too if I thought it would do any good.”

“Cally!Where are you?”Carlos called.
