“Because you were afraid of your parents seeing me leave in the morning, even though they were two blocks away.” He leaned back to rest the back of his head on the iron headboard.
“Ah yes, I remember. Which was silly since they knew I was always with you anyway.”
“Have you seen them since you’ve been out here?”
I shook my head as I ate the last bite on my plate. “Moira was here the one weekend, but I haven’t seen them since I left. My mother’s been after me to come home because she didn’t like the idea of me out here alone.”
“They don’t like you out here alone with me, right?”
Once I told them that I was back with Dominic, I wasn’t sure how they’d take it. They’d loved him at the time but hated how long it had taken me to get over him, or to be able to pretend in front of them I was over him.
I shrugged at the crook of his brow. “Yes and no, I guess. I told her that I didn’t want to make the drive but, I was a little afraid to go home.”
“Afraid? Why?”
I averted his gaze a minute before meeting his narrowed dark eyes. “At first, it was because I didn’t want to lose the nerve to come back out here, but then I just didn’t want to be away from you, even though I kept you at a distance. Stupid and silly.”
“Nope, not stupid at all.” He put his coffee mug down on the bedside table and pulled me toward him. “First, if you did lose your nerve, which you’re too stubborn to do, I would have made the drive to Queens to get you. And second, I understand because knowing you were around, I never wanted to go too far, either.”
He swiped a glop of icing off what was left of his roll and dragged it around my nipple.
“We are two sad and pathetic people, and I love it.”
He leaned in to kiss me then dropped his head to lick across my breast. I squealed before my back fell against the bed, trying to squirm out of his hold when he pinned my arms above me.
“Dominic, stop!” I screamed before we both stilled at what I thought was a knock at the door.
“Did you hear something?” I asked before hearing it again only stronger.
“You didn’t get the doorbell fixed, did you?” He dropped his head on my chest with a groan.
“Why? The only ones who visit are you and Caterina.”
I shrugged my robe back on before I headed downstairs.
“You’re calling maintenance again on Monday, or I’ll fix it myself,” he shouted after me.
“Yeah, yeah,” I taunted over my shoulder before I peeked through the side window next to the door, spotting my sister and both of my parents.
Shit.
I glanced down at my robe, and realized how short it cut across my thighs, mypantylessthighs. Dominic was naked upstairs and it was too late to change what I was wearing or warn him.
Well, this was one way to break the news.
I clicked the locks open, shutting my eyes a second before I braced myself.
“Mom, Dad, Moira, hi! This is such a surprise.”
My sister crossed her arms, laughing into her hand while my parents regarded me with matching crinkled foreheads.
“Did you know your doorbell doesn’t work?” Mom said kissing my cheek before stepping inside.
“We thought maybe you were out, but your car is in the driveway.” My father pulled me into a hug. I wrapped one arm around him and pulled down the hem of my robe with the other. “We would have been here sooner if not for the damn traffic.”
I let the door slam behind my sister, hoping that would send up some kind of signal to Dominic in the bedroom to put pants on.
“You are so busted!” Moira whispered from behind me.
