“If you don’t like it, I can get you something else. I stuck to something simple, but I am curious now where your taste runs when it comes to food and drink. Are you like… an order-the-same-thing-every-time person or do you like to keep trying new things?”

Honestly, I had never really thought about it. We barely ate anything that didn’t come from the restaurant.

“I imagine I would like trying new things.”

“But you don’t know?”

With a shrug, I sighed.

“When your family owns a restaurant, it’s pretty much all you eat. But since I’ve spent sixteen years stuck with Italian, I think something new would be a welcomed change. Just not sure what my taste buds would say to that.”

I looked at the table where he had his laptop and cell phone and then slid my gaze to him.

“You should try it.”

“Try what?”

“New things.”

He looked at me curiously and I reached over, closed his laptop, and put it back in his bag. Then I took his phone and did the same. He looked at me, bewildered.

“What are you doing?”

Giving him a notebook and a pen from my own backpack, I shrugged.

“Live without technology for a couple of hours. Like us peasant folk.”

Our waitress returned with our order. I looked down to see a cappuccino. The foam was shaped like a heart with what looked like some kind of gold dust around the outline of it. It was actually really beautiful. I looked to his drink which, of course, was an iced vanilla latte. Only rich people wanted iced coffee. What was the point of coffee if there wasn’t a chance it would burn your tongue?

“Can I get you anything else?”

Liam smiled.

“Just the promise that you will keep bestowing your heavenly smile on me every now and then.”

Amanda giggled as she walked away. Liam was clearly a ladies’ man. Not that it mattered to me. He could flirt with whomever he wanted. I was done with boys. Sniffing at the air, my attention turned to the muffins sitting on the table.

Liam whispered, “Your choice. Adam is fig and walnut, Eve is apple.”

Never in my life had I heard of a fig-and-walnut muffin before. Also, I suspected I would never be at a place fancy enough to serve it again. Here was my chance. If I was going to force him to give up his electronics, I should be willing to explore the fancy side of life. I slid the “Adam” muffin over to my side of the table. Liam raised his eyebrow but lifted his cup to me.

“To trying new things.”

I raised my cappuccino as well. It was exactly what I would have ordered. We clinked glasses and both took a sip. My eyes went wide and Liam smiled.

“You seemed like a dollop of joy kind of girl.”

Laughing, I put down my cup.

“Don’t let my family hear that. They never let me have an extra espresso shot. I’m so jittery most of the time they don’t even like me having coffee.”

Liam winked.

“It will be our secret.”

I sighed. I had really wanted to hate this place.

“What’s wrong?”
