CHAPTER 9

Gordy watched as Gunner went flying through the air splashing into the pool. He came up sputtering, “You cheated. We said no dragon power, damn it. We get the point.”

Cobra laughed, as he tried to maintain his balance on Taco’s shoulders, waiting for Gunner to reposition on Jamil’s. They were playing chicken in the pool, and it seemed to Gordy that although Gunner had the highest points, Cobra didn’t give a crap as long as Gunner was the one flying through the air… if Cobra’s laughter was anything to go by.

“It looks like Gunner is going to win this one.” Gio said with a wide smile.

Gordy laughed, “You don’t believe that anymore than I do. He might get the points, but Cobra only wants to watch my mate hit the water.”

“True. They can kick ass against the worst of the worst, but when it comes to inside competitions… they are nothing but little boys.” Gio said, then whispered, “Watch this.”

Unless you were sitting next to Gio like Gordy was, you wouldn’t see his pointer finger swirling around and building a large wave higher and higher in the deep end. With a sweep of his finger the wave moved quickly and covered the men and dragons in the water. All four went under and came back up sputtering. Cobra turned glaring at Gio who was laughing hysterically. “That was so not cool.”

Still laughing, Gio said, “Maybe not, but I think I win.”

Cobra looked at Taco and the dragon looked back, both nodded and started out of the pool. Gio squealed and took off running as Cobra and Taco rushed behind him trying to catch him. Wind was blowing, rain started falling, and if Gordy wasn’t mistaken, a zap of lightning, or what looked like it, hit Cobra right on the left butt cheek.

Gordy shook his head as he stood up. They were all insane, but Gordy loved it all. Gordy couldn’t remember being so happy even at a time he knew he shouldn’t be. The only thing missing was his little Gummy Bear. Gordy knew that Bren was watching his Yorkie for him, but still, Gummy Bear was the one thing he had left that Maxine had given him. The one being that stuck by Gordy through all the crap his life had become on that fateful day.

Going into the kitchen, Gordy picked up his cell, needing to see his little fur ball. It had been two whole days, and Gordy worried Gummy Bear would go into depression if he didn’t at least see and hear from Gordy. Gummy Bear suffered from separation anxiety at the best of times, and these times were anything but good. Well, not counting the bonding Gordy had gone through with Gunner and Jamil.

He hesitated remembering Gunner telling him to not call anyone right now. He had said it was best to stay off radar for a while, but still… it was just a phone call and Gordy was really worried about his Gummy. People might look at the Yorkie like just a dog… a pet, but to Gordy, Gummy Bear was like the child he knew he would never be able to have.

Gordy had always wanted kids of his own. It was surprising because of the way he was raised by parents that never wanted him, but to Gordy, to have kids of his own would give him the opportunity to raise children in a loving environment, and have the family he always dreamed of having his entire life.

Maybe he should ask Gunner if he could call Bren? “No. I’m a grown man and I need to check on my baby. I don’t need permission to call my Gummy Bear. We’re mates, but that doesn’t give him or anyone else the right to tell me what to do. Those days were over the day his father killed his Maxine.”

With that resolve in mind Gordy logged onto his Facebook and hit the camera to make a video call. This way Gummy Bear would not only be able to hear his voice, but he would be able to see his face.

Bren’s image appeared and he was smiling, “Hey Gordy, how’s mating life going?”

“Great. Gunner and Jamil are great. If it weren’t for the fact that my father’s trying to kill me, life would be just about perfect.” Gordy answered.

“And you say that so nonchalantly. Gordy, I swear I will never understand you.” Bren said with a shake of his head, then asked, “So what do I owe the pleasure of your call?”

Gordy sighed, saying, “I was just kind of hoping I might be able to see Gummy Bear. I really miss him and we haven’t ever been apart this long before. He tends to get depressed when I leave without him, and I…”

“Say no more.” Bren laughed, and started walking into the house. “He’s been kind of down, but Azul has taken him into his care and the two have become fast friends. See.”

Gordy smiled when he saw Gummy lying on Azul’s lap, and Wiz’s tiny maharishi was curled up on Gummy’s neck watching what looked to be a soap opera of some sort on the television. Azul was feeding his baby something with one hand and petting him with another. “Hey, Gummy, what is my baby eating?”

Gummy jumped up looking around as if to find Gordy somewhere in the room. The motion was so fast and unexpected that Wiz’s dragon fell towards the floor and slowly fluttered back up, flapping his wings and looking at Bren with a dark expression.

Gordy laughed, “Be careful Gummy Bear, you could have hurt your friends.”

Gummy Bear looked everywhere, yipping as he faced the entrance to the living area. “I’m not there silly boy, I’m over here.”

Gummy Bear looked left and right, then jumped off Azul’s lap, barking and running in a circle. Bren picked up the dog, saying, “He’s right here sweetheart. Calm down.”

Smiling wide, Gordy said, “Hey Gummy. I’ve missed you. I hope you’re being a good boy?”

Hearing Gordy’s voice and finally looking at the phone, Gummy Bear whimpered and then gave a loud yip.

“I know, baby. Daddy misses you too.” Gordy rasped out, feeling tears filling his eyes.

Gummy Bear gave another sad whimper and Gordy about lost it completely, with a shaky voice saying, “I’ll be home soon, my Gummy Bear. Daddy promises.”

His little ears drooped even lower as his eyes got sadder, if that was even possible, and then he hid his entire face in Bren’s armpit.
