“Hey, Mom.” Piper’s chuckle warmed my chest with a dash of longing on top.
“How’s everything going on your side?” I sat on the bed and silently moutheddaughterto my roommate.
Remy gave me a thumbs-up and then lifted a piece of fruit from the to-go box in her lap, not at all bothered by my taking a call.
“School’s good,” Piper answered. “I made friends with a girl in my French class yesterday. She shared some candy with me during the lecture. I missed getting breakfast and was starving.”
Remy glanced my way after I laughed. Perhaps, I’d made a new friend by sharing my food too. Maybe the best of friends all had food-based origin stories.
“I love that. Not the missing breakfast part, but school keeps you on your toes. Send pics when you get a chance, okay? I miss you, little shit.”
She snorted out a laugh. “Will do. How was registration. Any hotties around?”
“Registration was fine,” I blurted out, ignoring the image of Rylan’s face popping to into my mind.
And, oh, what a fine image that was.
“Good. Well, it’s lunchtime here, and I’m starving. But I wanted to check in. Try to have fun tomorrow, okay? Maybe find a cute guy, and you know, meet in the library stacks to hook up. It’s what all the school kids are doing these days. Or so I hear.”
I guess she wasn’t letting the guy thing go.
“Yeah. A cute guy. Exactly what Idon’tneed right now.”
Learning how to use my magic so I could blast off the ears of assholes in parking lots was first on the agenda. Not hooking up with a cute guy in the library.
“Never know, Mom. You could meet my new dad in one of your classes.”
My cheeks heated as Rylan’s face entered my thoughts again.Ugh, enough already.
“Okay, child. You keep your mind in the books and not on a new dad. I’m gonna hit the hay, but seriously… pics or I’m gonna assume you’re talking to me from beyond the dead on that underworld beach somewhere.” A yawn ended my speech, and I swear I heard Piper’s eyes rolling through the phone.
After years of Greek mythology being Piper’s favorite subject, we both knew she liked it when I brought it up in everyday conversations. Even if she pretended it was lame.
“Mom. There’s no cell service in the underworld. Be serious.”
“Yeah. All right, I’m tired. I’ll call this weekend.”
“Then we can both be dead!”
Though I missed our silly banter and would’ve loved to go on all night, I physically and mentally couldn’t.
“Night P.”
“Night, Mom.”
Piper hung up first. I grabbed the charger from the side pocket of my bag to plug the phone in before I passed out.
After mumbling goodnight to Remy, I crawled under the blankets. And just as I thought, the sheets were life changingly soft.
One more sleep, and I’d be starting school as a newly awakened witch.
Chapter Six
Morning, Star
My alarm rang, and I stretched after the best sleep in years. Through blurry, tired eyes, I saw Remy sitting at the edge of bed with a tall disposable coffee cup in her hand. She pointed to my desk with a long finger where another cup sat waiting.
“Got you coffee. The line was intense,” she said and then took a sip. Remy looked quite comfortable wearing sweats, and an oversized blue sleep shirt.
