No matter how intriguing the conversation might have been with Lana and the three men laughing with her, I couldn’t stop my wandering eyes.

It was almost as though his entire presence had been a fantasy.

Someone bumped into me a few minutes later, a hand sliding softly on my waist, and I swore I felt a finger dig into my belt. But the touch was gone within the second, and the person had fluttered back into the crowd by the time I managed to turn around.

There was something pressed beneath my belt.

I dug into it and bit my lips together upon seeing the candy heart.

HEY SEXY

I tried searching around the crowd without making it obvious, and eventually, I found Gavin’s handsome face by the bar. I popped the candy into my mouth as we locked eyes, then deliberately rolled it back on my tongue.

Fuck, he was cute.

He smiled crookedly at me, one hand shoving in his pockets as he turned back and pretended to laugh with his friends. He’d pushed the sleeves of his snug-fitting cream sweater up, revealing a few tattoos on those forearms—forearms that I wanted to see extended from my neck as he wrapped those long fingers around my throat. I eyed the firm grip he held on his drink, warmth pooling between my thighs at the vision of that grip on my ass or entwined in my hair…

A popular song came on the jukebox, and the entire bar erupted in cheers. I pulled myself out of the trance as Lana jumped up and down at my side, her arm punching the air. Lana grabbed one of the guys we were chatting with and dragged him closer to her. I laughed out loud as she attempted to dance with him, and, to my surprise, the man, David, kept up with her.

I nursed my cocktail as I stood back to watch and shake my head at Lana’s terrible dancing. And when I looked over for Gavin, he was gone.

“Who knew this song could cause such adistraction.”

Awareness stretched from my ears down my spine and between my legs at the sound of Gavin’s voice. I hugged my arms tighter as I continued to watch Lana, though my mind stayed only on the hot magnetism of Gavin at my side.

David twirled Lana, making her hair bounce, and Lana’s smile became so bright that it was like the entire room was suddenly her own stage.

I leaned a little closer to Gavin, our arms brushing. “It would be a perfect move of the hero in a romance novel to put this song on so that everyone was looking the other way just so he could swoon the heroine off her feet,” I said before pivoting to face him.

“I agree,” he said. “The hero would probably ask her to dance with him. Maybe tell her how beautiful she looked or how he admired her outfit.”

“He’d be a gentleman about it, too,” I added. “Sing a little to her. Offer to buy her another drink. Of course, he would keep his hands to himself and not do anything…inappropriate.”

“Your hero sounds like an idiot,” Gavin said.

I resisted a laugh and swirled my drink, suspicious of the devious smirk on his lips. “You didn’t happen to turn on this song, did you?”

Gavin’s deep chuckle made me shift. He took the drink from my hand and set both our glasses on the table at my back before pressing his hands into the edge on either side of my ribs, trapping me in his embrace. My breath hitched. Our bodies were nearly flush. His warmth blanketed me as my lashes lifted, and I watched his blown pupils travel over my face, eventually landing on my own, and I was paralyzed by the lustful glow emitting back at me from his eyes.

“Sweet girl, I’m not your hero,” he rasped. “I’m the god of lust…desire… I’m the shadow you see in the dark when you think someone is watching you touch yourself, the blank face you see when you stare at the walls and imagine someone between your thighs. I’m the god you pray to when your thighs shake and your breaths cease… I’meverywicked fantasy you’ve ever had.”

Oh, fucking hell.

I squeezed my thighs at the restless ache rising between them. “All of them?” I asked.

His chest pressed to mine, his head bending lower, and I found my gaze moving to his lips, my hands slightly grasping at his sweater. The soft thread and his stern chest burned beneath my fingertips as his next words hit my lips.

“Be mine tonight, and I’ll show you.”

The room erupted with more cheers. The song finished, and Gavin took a step back. That smile grew again as the darkened glow lifted from his green eyes. Lana’s laughter cut the blunt noise around us, bringing me back to reality as Lana and David nearly fell into the table. I shook my head at my friend, almost envious of the way her smile lit up a room.

And when I turned back to Gavin, he was gone.

I really wished he would stop disappearing like that.

I started to pick up my drink, only to find another candy heart on the table beside it.
