“You seem to know a lot about fantasy romance,” she said, drawing me out of my trance.

“I’m Cupid,” I said with a shrug. “It’s part of my job to know these things.”

There was a brief second when it looked like she genuinely considered the possibility. Her bright eyes squinted slightly, nails strumming on her glass again.

“Okay,Cupid,” she said, saying my name like it was a joke. “Is that—“

A drunk man cut between us then, laughing as one of his friends had pushed him. Chloe jolted back, hugging her drink to her, but the new man seemed dazed and confused when he looked up and found her staring.

“I’ve fallen and found an angel,” the man said.

I couldn’t keep my soft laughter down. Chloe caught my eye as she rolled her own, and I reached into the bowl of candy hearts.

One of the friends shook the drunk man’s shoulders as I stepped out from behind them. The three men were still gathering their wits, not paying attention to anyone else, and I took the opportunity to move to Chloe’s side.

Brushing halfway in front of her, I held up the candy heart I’d chosen, letting her see it briefly and gaging the look in her eyes before tucking my finger delicately beneath her chin and bending to whisper, “Open wide,” into her hair.

Pure lust rose in those shimmering eyes… lust that I intended to take advantage of in every way these naughty candy hearts told me to. Her lips parted just so, as I tilted her head back by her chin. I held her gaze hostage and placed that heart on her tongue, and for a second, it was all I could do to hold myself back from moving further… from skimming my thumb on her pouting scarlet lip, grazing my finger along her highlighted cheek, or curling my hand in her silky hair…

That white candy heart on her tongue was a siren’s song to my crazed, immortal soul—calling me out on my insatiable desire for this woman…thiswoman…

I needed to consume her.

To touch her.

Taste her.

Feel her.

A whisper of my touch against her throat was the last thing I left her with before making my way back across the room.

CHAPTER SIX - CHLOE

THE CANDY HEART seemed to burn on my tongue. His touch was a brand I couldn’t get out of my head. I could still feel his fingers on my chin, brushing my throat… My face and neck heated as I relived those last few moments over and over.

I remained in a stupor over the way his gruff whisper had made the hair on my neck rise until Lana finally pushed up behind me.

“That washot,” Lana said in a low tone, leaning eagerly on her elbows beside me. “God, that was hot. What did the heart say?”

I crushed the heart between my teeth and met Lana’s eyes. “Be mine,” I answered.

Lana slumped as though the words had made her weak. “Ugh. Fuck off, Clo,” she said. “You go out one night and you find the hottest thing in the room, who also happens to be charming and not a complete dick. Where is this luck of mine?”

One of the men who came to join our table cleared his throat, and Lana stared at him.

“Too eager.” She slid over a candy that read BOI BYE in his direction, but all he did was laugh.

I sipped on my water as Lana and the new man, David, began bantering back and forth. His friend, Devon, tried chatting with me, but it was all I could do not to try and find Gavin in the crowd.

My one-hour timer went off, and Lana raised a brow in my direction.

I hated giving Lana the satisfaction of being right, of admitting I wanted to stay longer.

However, I couldn’t stop thinking about him.

Lana’s face lit up as she watched me hit the ‘dismiss’ button, and then she threw her hands in the air with a loud cheer—going as far as to flag down the waitress for another round of candy vodka shots.

I shot back the liquid while flipping Lana off.
